Same here. They add provenance and more bite. Incidentally, don't other countries also have their "Florida" too? Queensland, for Australians, for instance, has the same vibe. The carrot-crunching bits on the rural fringe, for British people: East Anglia, for instance. Although the remote Pennine district of Todmorden could well attract the same people - a case of nuts defying gravity and rolling uphill.
Edited by AgProvBecause as the article itself makes clear, Florida's reputation comes far more from journalists being able to trawl its arrest records for eye-catching headlines than any real differences from other states (though being a big state with unusual demographics means they become very relevant at election time).
Stories don't tell us monsters exist; we knew that already. They show us that monsters can be trademarked and milked for years.I suggest we replace the Fark quotes in the description, as I don't think Fark would be seen as relevant anymore (plus, giving the date instantly dates the description to when it was initially written).
I’m not sure if it should warrant a full-scale cleanup-thread, but a lot of recent politically charged events are getting listed, which could pose some Rule of Cautious Editing Judgement issues if left as is.
I'm thinking about folderizing the "Weird Examples" section. Sandbox Link
Is someone going to mention the fan incident that happened in the recent debate, or is it going as a sub-mention under Rick Scott's mention?
how do I do this?
"Thank you for dismissing my entire state as being idiots. For the record, the "giant reptiles" keep away from people. I've never seen a live wild gator in my 29 years in Tallahassee. If gators were more common, we would move."
To add to that, I emphasize the word "wild." I've seen gators in captivity and I know that people who go to the wild areas do sometimes see gators but my point was (as one other troper touched on) that you can go a long long time without seeing one if you stick mostly to the urban areas. I'd have moved a long time ago if large reptiles were a regular part of my life. I even have a lake I like to go to every summer and though I've heard it gets the occasional gator, I've never seen them.
Florida is some Deep South mixed with Disney World, mixed with lots of beach bringing in tourists, retirees (our percentage of persons over 65 is 17.4% compared to 12.8% national average, and older people tend to be more politically active so this has a disproportionate effect on local policy) and Cuban refugees (and yes, even a few normal people). Thats where at least some of the weird comes from, the odd mix of demographics combined <sigh> gators.
