Yeah, I don't think I see women here frequently.
"For a successful technology, reality must take precedence over public relations, for Nature cannot be fooled." - Richard FeynmanZero context example to fix it:
- Dr. Nishida from the Witchblade anime.
- Professor Akihiro Kurata from Digimon Savers is evil incarnate
- Washuu, from Tenchi Muyo! and its spinoff series Pretty Sammy (a mostly heroic example).
- Dr. Gero from Dragon Ball Z and also Dr. Muu from Dragon Ball GT.
- Dr. Ni Jianyi from Saiyuki.
- Hakase of Mahou Sensei Negima! qualifies. So does Chao.
- Dr. Mashirito of Doctor Slump.
The old picture was better. :P
ETA: Didn't know it was copyrighted. That sucks.
Edited by Filby Groovy.I don't think that Daedalus and Hephaestus count as Mad Scientists. Daedalus might have been a partial inspiration, but the trope was very unbuilt back in Ancient Greece.
Oppression anywhere is a threat to democracy everywhere. Are there any examples of a Mad Scientist having a very mild-mannered adorkable look to them, which serves to hide just how crazy they are?
It looks like he's getting high off of his own chemicals in the page image.
Technically speaking, most of the "mad scientists" aren't actually trying to test or prove a hypothesis, but rather, are making things and putting them together. As the following link shows, most mad scientists are actually mad engineers. http://www.neatorama.com/2009/01/01/mad-scientists-are-actually-just-mad-engineers/
Would this information fit anywhere on the trope page? At all?
Edited by therugi Hide / Show RepliesAlthough I agree that many so-called mad scientists are just mad engineers, to me it seems the most stereotypical mad scientists get kicked out of the scientific community because they believe in an out-there hypothesis or wish to pursue unethical experiments. The mad engineering usually exhibited thereafter makes sense as a consequence of being forced to work alone.
As an example, the mad scientists in A Miracle Of Science tend to build mad creations, but always based on some out-there theory; Dr. Juruna has some strange ideas about table salt, for example: http://project-apollo.net/mos/mos280.html
ForkCan we have a not-generic picture? I know we want to avoid Face And A Caption, but come on. There's gotta be someone we can agree on and put up.

This is still a signature.
Is it worth mentioning that this is almost an entirely male trope, and perhaps, some of the reasons behind why?
