I've often wondered if Shirley Jackson was, ahem, "stoned" at the time she wrote her best-known opus.

And I rather enjoy being in a classroom full of "Lottery virgins" when the short story is being read to them for the first time, and watching their reactions.

Does it still count if the doom part was certainly NOT intended? Because the Teacher in Space Project turned into this in NASA's despite when an O-ring on one of the solid rocket boosters failed, wind shear dislodged a solid-fuel plug that had formed in the resulting gap, and a jet of flame started cutting into the fuel tank...
