was a downgrade, as it does not present the punchline as effectively. For the record, the pun in that line is (was?) that the trope is about villains who get eaten at the end [of the movie]). And do we really, actually have to explain to our readers what the phrase "just deserts" means? The explanation that it derives from "justly deserve" sounds like needless lecturing of the reader to me, as I feel that fact is really quite obvious.
"Explaining the joke" is deadly to the joke. If we have to spell out a pun in so many words, we might just as well not make a pun at all.
