How many tape measures do you know that can lift a 200 lb man with the retraction system?
Can anyone describe how Batman uses one in the Anime and Literature sections?
Never trust anyone who uses "degenerate" as an insult. In cartoons/tv-shows sometimes the grapplinghook seem to be able to latch on to the sky or moon or whatever isn't supposed to be available off-screen. You could be on an oil-rigg in the middle of an ocean but all of a sudden batman will come swinging in with his grapple attached to...what exactly?
What I was wondering is if there should perhaps be a sub-trope about this seemingly constantly present off-camera grappling-point?

so yeah, why not?
Out of curiosity (and in the interest of Batman) should we change the trope picture to...well, Batman using a grappling hook pistol instead of Kim Possible?
Edited by RedViking Hide / Show RepliesI agree. A character more iconic would be a better choice, and Batman is probably the best choice. Other possibilities would be Link or Rorschach.
Batman using one would be pretty good, if you can find one that's not black on black on black that can actually be seen. Rorschach or Link would also work, though not as well as Batman would; Rorschach is kind of overshadowed by Batman due to the genre overlap, and Link, as a video game character, will not be known by as many people, and his grapple guns aren't really gun-like.

You know,I was thinking, people have said the big problem with a grapple gun is that it would have to have a really hefty battery to reel someone in, but if you think about that, tape measures offer an ingenious solution. You can pair a lighter battery with the manual retraction system that tape measurers use, and your wouldn't need a heavy battery. Well,a stronger, more tightly wound version of that, however they work. Yes, no?
