Given that this is currently the featured trope, I think that the topic of renaming should be brought up again. Commonly-used term or not (and it has drastically fallen out of favor in mainstream usage since the page's creation) we currently have the word "fag" displayed on the home page, which is just not a good look.

This is, as far as I can tell, the only trope with such a blatantly unacceptable slur in the name. There is, presumably, a reason "N-Word Privileges" does not actually include the n-word in the title.

I'm not suggesting we censor use of the term, simply that the main name be changed and "fag hag" be turned into an alternate name. Given that the last discussion on this seems to have been nearly 8 years ago, I'm hoping attitudes have changed enough to come around to the idea.

Probably the most salient case I've heard for bowdlerizing a trope name. Not going to lie, going to the home page and seeing that was pretty weird.

Incidentally, the only other trope I can think of with a slur in its name is the comparatively tame Half-Breed Discrimination.

I'm honestly not sure why this is even an argument. I've literally never heard this term used before so the idea that it's "common use" seems to be an exageration at best.

"Fag Hags are stereotypically portrayed as overweight."

Really? The only fiction example I could think of was Will and Grace, and looking through the examples on the main page most women mentioned are not overweight. FWIW the real-life fag hags I happen to know are quite slim.

Maybe we could change the title of this trope because currently it is nsfw and after getting a link got in trouble

Yeah, definitely way too offensive. We should brainstorm for names, but all I can think of would be misinterpreted. Also, MY FIRST POST FTW.

Fag Hag is a widely-used term elsewhere, the trope has a reasonable number of wicks and inbounds, and "it's offensive" has never been a reason to rename something. I'm sorry, but this title will likely stay.

Agree'd. I vote for "Gal Pal": it means the same thing, and it doesn't contain a slur.

I say don't. Considering the history behind the term, if this gets censored we might as well censor every use of the word "nigga," meaning about half of every rap group page.

Fag, like all words on the site, is just a specific combination of letters on a computer screen. If you let that get to you, you might have anger or depression management issues; get a therapist. Assuming you're straight, insisting that this be changed comes off as wanting to be offended for all the homo- and bi-sexuals that aren't, such as myself, and that comes out making us look like we can't do it ourselves. Let the fags do their thing, and you do yours.

We def need to change the name. Almost all uses of the n-word on trope pages on this site are direct quote, song lyrics, or part of a group/work's title. That's fine. But this is not those situations. And notice how none of those use the slur in its actual form, i.e. with the -er ending. Whereas this page does.

We can and absolutely should recognize the fact that gay and queer people use the f word amongst themselves and FH as a term to call women who seem to single-mindedly and almost exclusively want to befriend gay and queer people. That said, there's a reason why we don't call the trope page for white characters who like black people "N***** Lover" even though the n-word has been reclaimed by black people.

I agree that it definitely needs a new name, but "gal pal" is not a good alternative, as it's insufficiently descriptive. it fails to specify that the gal in question is pals with a gay man, which is important. The rules say that it's more important for a trope's name to be descriptive than to be witty, so I propose "prefers gay friends."

Does this even /need/ to be a trope? It's essentially "woman being friend with gay male." That doesn't seem particularly notable to me, and honestly seems a /bit/ homophobic.

It's specifically about female characters for whom a very close relationship with a (or more often, many) gay male(s) is a very significant part of their character. It can be presented in homophobic ways, but more often it's just noteworthy that the individual character's only connection to the rest of the story is through gay males.

What's the trope for "All of her fans are gay?"

Like on 30 Rock when one character was astonished to run into her one fan who wasn't gay?

"Show us the Galaxy Warp."
