Should we consider renaming this trope? I mentioned this trope by name once while my family and I were watching Desperate Housewives and they got upset at me.
Edited by EmperorZimPulled this:
- In The Simpsons "The Color Yellow" episode, Lisa does research on her great-great-great grandmother Mabel Simpson, who was originally married to Hiram (who was presumed to be the great-great-great grandfather) on Colonel Burns' plantation, until it is revealed that Mabel divorced Hiram after he informed Colonel Burns of the refugee slave's whereabouts for a pair of shoes, and Mabel ultimately elopes with Virgil, an African-American slave who joins her in moving to Canada, and she gives birth to a child named Abraham fathered by Virgil whose descendants include his great-grandson, Abraham "Grandpa" Simpson (Homer's elderly father). Homer discovers that he is 1/64-th African American, and muses on why he is able to identify with African-Americans, including Carl Carlson who has African-American and Icelandic heritage.
When was it ever established that Dr. Bunnigus's parents were inbred? Low-end morons yes, but not related as far as I know.
Pulled this. Weblinks Are Not Examples. Also, it said it is an inversion, which it isn't.

I'm the one that added the news story about Maria the Romani, but I'm honestly not sure if that's against policy or not.
Should it be taken out?
What rises must fall, what falls may rise again. Hide / Show RepliesThere's no entry on Maria the Romani... which should probably be added.

Hop on over to this page and add them.Inverted in the classic "The Dick Van Dyke Show" episode "That's My Boy?" had the Petries (Dick Van Dyke and Mary Tyler Moore) bring their new son, Richie, home from the hospital. They get told he might have been accidentally switched with someone else. The other son's parents, the Peters, are told, and they go to the Petries'. It turns out the Peters are black (played by Greg Morris and Mimi Dillard; it's said by Dick the audience laughter that the scene got on the reveal was the LONGEST they had had on the show).
All turns out well, though it's admitted by Rob that Jimmy Peters is a top student with straight As, while Richie isn't. The punch line? Rob insists "I still think we got the wrong kid!"
Archived discussion is not correct unless dark skin is controlled by a single gene that is completely dominant, like eye color. Otherwise it's possible for the parents to have one dark skinned gene each and for the child to inherit both of them and be darker than each parent. Of course, there is still a limit to how dark the child can be as a result of this.
Hide / Show RepliesGenes controlling melanin always express themselves. Thus it is possible for there to be a cumulative effect, two light brown parents producing a darker brown child, but it would be impossible for two lily white or even one light tan and one lily white parent to produce a child darker than the darker parent because the other wouldn't have a complimentary dark gene to pass on.
