What would be an appropriate trope to describe the corpsepaint that is so prevalent in the Second Wave bands (and all those that get direct influence from them)?
One Nation Under WiFiAfter seeing the regional scenes listed on the Death Metal page, I would like to do something similar with the Black Metal page, given how scenes are so important in Black Metal. What I want is something like on the Death Metal page: a list of major scenes (e.g. Norway, Germany, Ukraine, Greece) with a short description of that scene's sound and a short list of bands from that scene.
Here are the major scenes I can think of:
- Norway (e.g. Mayhem, Burzum, Darkthrone)
- Sweden (e.g. Sacramentum, Silencer, Marduk)
- Finland (e.g. Impaled Nazarene, Satanic Warmaster, Horna)
- Germany (e.g. Falkenbach, Absurd, Nargaroth)
- France (e.g. Mütiilation, Deathspell Omega, Blut Aus Nord)
- Greece (e.g. Rotting Christ, Nocternity, Varathron)
- Poland (e.g. Behemoth, Graveland, Fullmoon)
- Ukraine (e.g. Drudkh, Nokturnal Mortum, Astrofaes)
- Russia (e.g. Branikald, Arkona, Temnozor)
- Austria (e.g. Summoning, Pervertum, Abigor)
- United States (e.g. Xasthur, Krieg, Von)
- United Kingdom (e.g. Venom, Cradle of Filth, Forefather)
The reason I am posting this here, rather than starting it on the main page, is because there are a few scenes (for example, the Greek, Austrian, and Polish scenes) whose general sound I'm not familiar with and would like some help in defining them.
Edited by 24.144.192.222As for bands to add under Depressive Suicidal Black Metal, might I suggest the Japanese black metal project, Endless Dismal Moan?
While DSBM is one of the smaller subgenres of Black Metal, Endless Dismal Moan has in recent years gained respect for his experimentation of mixing Depressive Suicidal Black Metal with Industrial Black Metal and especially Avant-Garde Black Metal elements. Endless Dismal Moan gained online noteriety when it was confirmed that Chaos 9, head of the project, committed suicide in 2009, and his music is growining within DSBM.
Plus, Chaos 9 was essentially a Black Metal Bishounen! That's something you don't see every day!
Edited by PaulieRomanovThe Death Metal and Doom Metal pages, rather than having one big list of bands, have different lists for different subgenres of death and doom respectively. Should the same thing be done with this page? There are certainly enough black metal subgenres to do so. As for some of the subgenres I have in mind ATM,
Edited by Lordnecronus last.fm | RYM Hide / Show RepliesYeah, I'm not the most knowledgable person about black metal either. I tend to like speed/thrash/power with the occasional doom or prog band....
?I've made a to-do list to make the list of subgenres. I've sorted quite a few bands into subgenres, though I imagine I've made a few mistakes here and there.
The subgenres I've got so far:
- "Traditional" black (eg. Mayhem) *
- First-wave black (eg. Bathory)
- Melodic black (eg. Dissection)
- Symphonic black (eg. Emperor)
- Folk/black (eg. Primordial)
- Viking black (eg. Enslaved)
- Depressive/suicidal black (eg. Silencer)
- Industrial black (eg. Blut Aus Nord)
- Ambient black (eg. Burzum)
- Avant-garde black (eg. Arcturus)
I'm unsure where to put Absu, Weakling and Peste Noire (three bands I want on the page), but other than that I've pretty much finished the list. Black/doom has been left off deliberately because it is already present on the Doom Metal page.
Edited by Lordnecronus last.fm | RYMOh wait, I'd suggest that you also add NSBM (even though most of us who aren't racists loathe it, it is *there* and it's sadly what a lot of peeps think of when they hear "black metal" if they don't think of Satanism, lol)
?I was tempted to add NSBM, as well as unblack metal. I initially decided against it because they're not different subgenres so much as different lyrical themes, but there are some people that may want to avoid listening to nazi black metal (Does this count as Godwin's Law?) or Christian rock.
Also, black/thrash bands (ie. not first wave) will go under traditional/raw black metal.
Edited by Lordnecronus last.fm | RYMActually, I think that adding them would be the best idea because they're reviled enough by the peeps who don't like them that they *are* separate genres.
?I always thought that the bit on black metal at three chords and the truth wasn't really accurate, and I don't think it makes a good page quote. It seems to mostly describe the subgenre typified by Darkthrone, and the persistent idea that Venom did anything more than set the tone.
After all, as it says right in the intro paragraph, black metal does have a strong tendency towards experimentation, and it tends towards Epic Rocking at times, too. Thoughts?
Hide / Show RepliesI edited down the article to fit some of the past Discussion. Being in-depth is usually good, but that read like a 10-page essay, featuring tons of pointless information and a bizarre Wikipedia-styled discussion style. Any major Black Metal fans can feel free to add their own bits. Someone should add more tropey-style names into it as well to make it look more like something that belongs on this site (I put in a Genre Launch one, but that's it).
