Can you used Actor Allusion in a Non-Visual media?
I noticed the sometimes this trope is used in Fanfictions. For example, in this page, they said:
- "Actor Allusion: When Dipper mentions encountering a half human half spider creature, Ford becomes intrigued, places a pen in his mouth like a certain iconic Cigar Chomper, and proceeds to hammily and furiously yell, "I WANT PICTURES! PICTURES OF SPIDER-MAN!!!""
It still counts for this trope or would be a simple Shout-Out?
Edited by SoyValdo7 Valdothe toy of Gonzo as Darth Vader is technically this, because Gonzo played a Captain Ersatz of Vader in one episode.
Hide / Show RepliesIf you feel that way, then why not just add the example yourself? (Also, that's not an Actor Allusion. It's just the same "actor" playing the same role twice.)
I've just noticed that all the media that don't directly have actors have been cut. In theory that makes sense, I guess, but in practice, I'm not clear why Grand Nagus Zek quoting Vizzini from The Princess Bride in a Star Trek: Deep Space Nine Relaunch novel is somehow less "It's funny because Wallace Shawn played both roles!" than it would be if it was in the series. It's still the character played by Wallace Shawn, and it's still a reference to his past career. Even without actual Wallace Shawn.
I accidentally put this page on the cutlist. Sorry about that.
All hail Galvatron. Hide / Show RepliesI almost wish this page was cut. The amount of misuse is absurd. Is there any chance the page could be more blatant about what qualifies to cut down on the reams and reams of "This isn't the first time X was Y."
Edited by JohnShermanI've noticed a lot of people using Actor Allusion when they really mean "Hilarious In Hindsight", "Expy", etc. Would it be possible to perhaps write in an explanation of WHY these are different (seriously, it's really getting on my nerves).
A question that specifically pertains to licensed animation and video games: Sometimes a reference will be made to the original actor who played the part, even if they're currently being played by The Other Darrin. Is this still worth mentioning, or adding to the official description of the trope?
“Dude, sucking at something is the first step to being sorta good at something!” - Jake the Dog Hide / Show RepliesIt seems like the reverse of what they're describing by Actor Allusion. In fact I came to this page to bring up the category of the Reverse Actor Allusion. The example I had in mind was of the movie of "Arsenic and Old Lace", which included the line, "He looked like Boris Karloff." That alluded to the actor who had played on stage the Jonathan character referred to by that line.
Why is this trope Trivia, while other tropes like Shout-Out and Casting Gag are not? An allusion to a previous actor's role is a part of a work that is done deliberately. That's not Trivia, that's a trope.
Hide / Show RepliesMight want to ask here.
"For a successful technology, reality must take precedence over public relations, for Nature cannot be fooled." - Richard FeynmanDana Delany delivering the line "He laughs" in both Mask Of The Phantasm and Tombstone?
Incidentally, not only did both films come out the same year, but they came out within a day of each other.
Edited by 216.195.89.155I'm wondering if there's a trope where a work makes an allusion to another work of the writer, not the actor. Is there some sort of "Writer Allusion" trope, or could an example of that be put under Actor Allusion?
Hide / Show RepliesOr Director Allusion? (The final line in "The Geisha Boy" would qualify for that- Frank Tashlin did direct Bugs Bunny...)
Would Liam Neeson in Kingdom of Heaven warning Olando Bloom that there's more to a sword than just the blade. Considering this is what leads to his death in The Phantom Menace.
Hide / Show RepliesNah, that is Liam Neeson being Typecast as The Obi One for the fifteenth time.
In The Prestige there's a part where Andy Serkis (Gollum) remarks on Hugh Jackman's magic act, where he managed to accurately guess the contents of his audience's pockets.
Anybody else think this is a reference to Serkis's previous role as Gollum, a character who lost the riddle 'what do I have in my pocket?' to Bilbo in The Hobbit?
Before I add my own example, I want to ask whether this is really an example or not : ||http://fast1.onesite.com/capcom-unity.com/user/wilyweil/1796d0ff8caf2e1a97e2779e4cad8aff.jpg?v=250200||
The voice is Sanae Kobayashi, for you who don't know.
