I have not read this book, but I know that the creatures that the title refers to (and the description makes it pretty clear too) are not actual newts. They are intelligent, aquatic humanoids. "Fixing" the terminology to make it sound 'zoologically correct' may ultimately be a misguided effort, for the "newts" this page is talking about are neither reptiles nor amphibians.
