Is there any proof this story actually exists? I've been trying to research it with the Finnish name and I cannot find anything.

Well, there is the author and he wrote fairy tales.

I tried to find info on this particular story online, but couldn't. That doesn't mean that it doesn't exist, though. I suspect it is a literary fairy tale rather than a traditional folk tale, even though the description says otherwise.

Let's just say and leave it at that.

The story's available by Gutenbeg Project (only in Finnish though) at http://www.gutenberg.org/files/16314/16314-h/16314-h.htm
