Given that Tropes Are Tools, I can see how it fits. There are some good in-story reasons for him to desperately want to believe the best in the people he knew before, and therefore not notice/actively ignore things that are glaringly obvious to the readers. His interactions with smol!blake will undoubtly be a source of significant character developement, which is one of the points of the idiot ball.
Another contender might be Ping Pong Naïveté, given all his interactions with smol!emerald.
