I think I may have found another plot hole. If by their very nature Avatars can\\\'t be bound by the traditions of their nations, then they should be dead easy to pick out; just look for the kid born on the same day as the death of the previous Avatar who sets off all your \\\"crazy freak\\\" instincts. And in light of that, why do any of the nations idolize the Avatar at all, given that their key shared trait is that they are inherently alien to everyone else on the planet - the only person in the world that can\\\'t be bonded? Heck, why didn\\\'t Aang\\\'s mother realize that she was effectively a bird who\\\'d hatched a mouse?

The only reason Zuko has any allies is because he is the exact opposite of an Avatar - he can bond people so hard they will turn on their initial binders. Even Toph seems to be in the process of being turned, except she\\\'s slow about it because criticizing Aang feels a lot like kicking a puppy.

Aang draws his allies(and I do mean long term allies - lots of people just want to use the Avatar as a weapon) mainly because he is psychologically the exact opposite of Zuko; though he is brave, he is not a \\\"hard man\\\", and is in fact incapable of being one. This means he\\\'s easy to befriend unless you are a \\\"hard man\\\" who can only respect other \\\"hard men\\\".
