On the baroque opera thing, I'm not particularly sure that all basses are evil. If you count that as baroque Seneca in l'Incoronazione di Poppea is not evil at all, and Pluto in L'Orfeo as well. Stern but not evil. Then in true baroque, Eneas (although it's more of a high baritone) is an idiot to the bone but I doubt he qualifies as evil. As well in Purcell, characters such as the Cold Genius, the Drunken Poet... are far from drunk, so I'm not really sure we can make a generalisation here.
