YMMV / Wolf's Rain

Go To

  • Anti-Climax Boss: In a world with Asskicking nobility like Jaguara and Darcia, Lord Orkham... is just an old man in a mask. He's contending for the position of the Big Bad until Jaguara sends her soldiers to his keep and he's easily taken out.
  • Awesome Music: The series' score, composed by Yoko Kanno, is highly acclaimed and considered one of the high points of the show even by people who don't like the series itself.
  • Complete Monster: Lady Jaguara is the initial antagonist and a ruthless Noble whose wars have helped turn the world into a wasteland. Destroying entire villages to kill wolves, Jaguara later slaughters the entire court of rival Noble Orkham, murdering the comatose beloved of Noble Lord Darcia as well, her own twin sister Hamona because she too loved Darcia, who didn't reciprocate because he loved Hamona. Having wolves captured to be slaughtered while she dines on their flesh and blood, Jaguara intends to open the gates to Paradise with no care for the Earth, trying to use the very same machine, the Moonlight Crucible, that Darcia I previously used, later attempting to poison and murder Lord Darcia when he refuses to ever love her.
  • Creepy Awesome: Darcia and Jaguara. The whole eerie masquerade culture of Nobles seems based around this.
  • Everyone Is Jesus in Purgatory: So, what do you think is going on in that very last scene?
  • Fan Nickname: Jaguara and Hamona, also known as Jugara and Hamona-hamona-hamona.
  • Fan-Preferred Couple:
    • Kiba and Myu only shared about two episodes together, but it was enough for several fans to wonder why the main focus was on a wolf's ambiguous relationship with a flower girl when he got way more interesting Ship Tease with a female Caracal.
    • Tsume and Toboe is a pretty well-liked ship, given that it is the ship with the most amount of stories on FF.net.
  • Hollywood Pudgy: Hige seems to be described by other characters as being chubby. In his wolf form, he's a tad fluffier than the others, but other than that, he's still your typical anime pretty boy.
    • In wolf form he looks fat for a wolf but, as a human, he seems a lot slimmer than he should. Maybe if he didn't have the hoodie...
    • Even the manga artist was confused by this!
  • Moral Event Horizon:
    • Darcia shooting Toboe and Quent in episode 28 made him lose a lot of fans. He follows this up in the series finale by brutally killing Blue, and then killing pretty much the rest of the cast before dying himself.
    • Jaguara crosses this before we even see her by murdering Hamona. Finding out her reason behind it only makes it worse.
  • Narm Charm: Darcia's costume is fine on its own, but add the mask and feathered headdress and it looks... weird. It could almost throw him into Fashion-Victim Villain if not for two things: the costume keeps a consistent color scheme and his vocals keep him badass. The result makes him look unnatural, especially with the mask, and ends with him even more creepy.
  • Nightmare Fuel:
    • Cheza's screams, most likely intentionally. Is that what a dog whistle sounds like to canines?
      • One of the times she screamed was because Wolf-Darcia was hauling her around by her spine.
    • Darcia's descent into becoming a maniacal monster in the OVA. His Slasher Smile in the finale doesn't help.
    • Hubb's death. He lets himself fall down a cliff when he realizes he can't follow the wolves further, but instead of dying immediately upon hitting the ground, is instead left in a pool of blood while still conscious, to which he uses his remaining strength to reach for the cigar in his pocket to inhale it and die completely that way.
  • Popular with Furries: Wolf's Rain is one of the most popular anime for furries, especially wolf fans. It's considered a Gateway Series for wolf fans into anime and one for anime fans into wolves.
  • Superlative Dubbing: You know you're doing something right when people who don't even like the show are praising the dub to the heavens.
  • Sweet Dreams Fuel: Cheza's song. Quite literally, as the wolves fall asleep and dream of what makes them happy when they hear it.
  • Too Cool to Live: Tsume. The fact that his death comes out of nowhere solidifies this.
  • Viewer Gender Confusion: Poor, poor Toboe, even the manga artist thought he was a girl.
  • The Woobie: Many of the main characters (Kiba, Tsume, Hige, Blue, Cheza, Hamona, Quent) with Toboe as the most clear-cut example.
