YMMV / Wizards (2020)

  • Alas, Poor Scrappy: Merlin was more of a Base-Breaking Character than a Scrappy, but some fans who didn't like him were saddened by his sacrifice in episode 8.
  • Alternative Character Interpretation: Were Gwen and Morgana having an affair behind Arthur's back, hence the nightly dalliances in the woods? It's not confirmed one way or the other, given Deliberate Values Dissonance about LGBTQ relationships and that Morgana wouldn't smear Gwen's name by saying that. If so, that would explain that Arthur doesn't just hate Morgana for getting his wife killed, but also because his sister and significant other betrayed him, and why we get minimal details on the queen apart from everyone gushing about her. It would also make Morgana the new Lancelot of the story, the one who inadvertently brings chaos to Camelot.
  • Angst? What Angst?: Technically one of Claire's most awesome moments, but she has minimal hesitation about working with Morgana after a future version of the woman brainwashed her, nearly made her kill Jim, and attempted to use her body to seduce Strickler. She gives a little bit of protest but then realizes this version of Morgana is not the same as the Pale Lady and comes to like her as Morgana argues for the trolls' freedom and helps Jim escape into the woods.
  • Ass Pull: Some see Jim being turned back into a human as this. After seeing Trollhunters present his transformation into a half-troll as permanent, it was a little jarring to see him return to being fully human, from Claire's tears, no less.
  • Catharsis Factor: Claire doesn't let Merlin off the hook for his actions in Trollhunters, namely manipulating her boyfriend into becoming a troll permanently and a target of Arthur's ire. She and Toby tell him off because no one likes him for his callous nature and how he's an Ungrateful Bastard. Douxie even admits that she has a point when noting Merlin has legitimate arguments as well.
  • Complete Monster (includes Trollhunters: Rise of the Titans):
    • Bellroc, Keeper of the Flame, is the master of the Arcane Order and one of the primordial demigods who shaped the universe. Discontent with humanity and their corruption of their order, Bellroc grew blind to the damage they inflicted upon the world, simply deciding to destroy it and start over. Bellroc mortally wounds King Arthur to fully corrupt Morgana le Fay and see her overrun and annihilate humanity, attempting to awaken the Titans by forcing the one repenting member of the Order, Nari, to assist despite her will. Bellroc proceeds to awaken the Titans and lead an attempt to uncover the Heartstone at Arcadia Bay, intending to destroy all that lives according to their own ego.
    • Skrael of the North Wind is Bellroc's subordinate and partner in the Order, being perhaps the most viciously sadistic of the trio. Forsaking his own vow of neutrality, Skrael happily joins the fight to kill many humans with intent to completely exterminate them. In between battles, Skrael enjoys torturing his captives, as he viciously does to Steve, later showing a similar glee in hurting Nari as well before forcing her to attempt to awaken the Titans and unmake all in existence.
  • Ensemble Dark Horse: Callista/Deya the Deliverer, partially because she's one of the few major female trolls we've seen in the franchise, and partially because she's voiced by Stephanie Beatriz.
  • Fanfic Fuel: If the series was 20 episodes of story condensed into 10, what else could they have fitted if that wasn't the case?
  • Heartwarming Moments: When Clare uses her magic to protect Jim.
  • Ho Yay:
    • A lot between Steve and Lancelot. It gets to the point you might start to wonder if Steve is bi.
    • Morgana seems just as broken up about what happened to Guinevere as Arthur. When she conjures a flower for a projection of Guinevere, one could not help but think of that as her kind of confession.
  • I Knew It!:
    • Douxie being a wizard had been a long standing theory ever since his introduction in Trollhunters, this is confirmed as he takes the lead role in this series.
    • Many fans correctly guessed that the series would explain how Morgana went from a heroic sorceress to an evil witch.
    • Many believed that with Tales of Arcadia expanding as a franchise, at some point a subplot would emerge that involved curing Jim of his troll physiology in a manner beyond Merlin's abilities, as what happens in the finale.
  • It's Short, So It Sucks!: Trollhunters has 3 seasons (52 episodes), 3Below has 2 (26 episodes), but Wizards has just 1 season (10 episodes). Not helping is that the majority of the show focuses on events only important to Trollhunters and leaves just a few episodes for its storyline, not to mention the series finale. Some people were disappointed we have so little time focused on really interesting aspects of Wizards, like HexTech and post-alien invasion Arcadia.
  • Magnificent Bastard: See here.
  • Memetic Mutation:
    • "The world is gonna end…again?!"
    • A fancam of Douxie set to MGMT's Little Dark Age gained notoriety on Twitter, achieving over a million views solely through the creator's relentless posting of it under just about every viral tweet.
    • Let's count how many times Claire would say, "Jim!".note
  • Moral Event Horizon:
    • Bellroc and Skrael cross it with their entire plan to wipe out the universe and recreate the Earth using uncontrolled magic.
    • The Green Knight/King Arthur proved himself to be irredeemable when he remorselessly killed Merlin without a second thought, even smirking evilly after throwing his former friend out the window of the Arcane Order's ship. Even Morgana was disgusted by this.
  • Take That, Scrappy!: For the people that dislike Merlin, when he suggests potentially sacrificing Jim, Toby tells him "This is why nobody likes you, dude."
  • They Wasted a Perfectly Good Character:
    • While we see plenty of Sir Galahad as just being another one of King Arthur's knights in the past, we first see him dying in the present day, manning a part of Camelot's floating castle before it is struck down in their sky-fight against the Arcane Order. The franchise establishes that Wizards Live Longer, but Galahad was not a wizard, yet he lives into the 21st century at the same age as he did in the 12th century. Whether Merlin made him immortal (and where he had been all this time) or was brought to the present with the Heart of Avalon is never explained, the heroes do not remark on recognizing him when they meet him in the past, he never really does anything of note and his death is not mentioned for the rest of the show's runtime.
    • Toby and Krel are left behind on Douxie and co.'s adventure to the past. Since the trio's storylines were heavily defined by mentors such as Merlin, Morgana, and Lancelot, they could've respectively found such relationships in Galahad (he and Toby are loyal heavy hitters) and King Arthur (he and Krel are royalty with sister issues).
    • Kanjigar, a fallen Trollhunter, who was confirmed in "For The Glory of Merlin" to have fought in the Battle of Killahead alongside his son, Draal. But only Draal appears and his father is never even mentioned.
