YMMV / Without a Paddle

  • Critical Dissonance: As you can see on metacritic, this film was critically panned, but well loved by audiences.
  • Hilarious in Hindsight: Around the time the movie came out, both Seth Green and Matthew Lillard were in Scooby-Doo: Monsters Unleashed. Their co-star in this movie, Dax Shepard, was originally attached to direct SCOOB!, the next theatrical Scooby-Doo film, though the film eventually went forward without his involvement.
  • Ho Yay: The scene where the guys huddle together in their underwear for warmth comes to mind...
  • Retroactive Recognition: Billy Newwood is played by Antony Starr, fifteen years before his breakout role as Homelander in The Boys (2019).
  • Tear Jerker: The ultimate fate of the legendary DB Cooper: after jumping out of the plane, he broke his legs upon landing despite his parachute. Stranded in the middle of nowhere in a snowstorm, Cooper dragged himself into a hidden cave, and burnt the money he had just stolen to stave off freezing to death for a few more hours, desperately hoping to be rescued by Del... who was miles away, the magnetic fields of the area throwing off his compass. For all the myth and legend surrounding Cooper both in-universe and out, he died a sad and lonely death that could happen to anyone.
    • It’s Billy's death that kickstarts the plot and you feel the sense of loss and grief of his remaining friends throughout the movie and it’s obvious by the end that even after everything they’ve been through and with things turning out well for all of them that they’ll continue to miss him for the rest of their lives. During the chase scene through the marijuana field, what for the most part is a hilarious scene suddenly becomes quite emotional when Jerry hallucinates a young Billy and is so overjoyed at seeing him again that he forgets that he’s running for his life. If that doesn’t pull at your heartstrings then the deleted scene where Jerry completely breaks down into tears after hearing that Billy has died certainly should!
