YMMV / Valkyrie Drive: Mermaid

Go To

  • Americans Hate Tingle:
    • While she's not outright despised, the overall opinion of Mamori in America is a lot sourer than it is in Japan. There are those who see her as The Woobie as described below, but she is the target of a lot of hate from people seeing her as a stupid, unfaithful girl that only remains with Mirei because she protects her and not because she has feelings for her.
    • Hibiki has been hit with a lesser degree of this as well. Western fans see her like nothing more than a dead weight for Kasumi with little to none redeeming qualities.
  • Cult Classic: Amongst the yuri fandom for featuring a ton of sexy women brought together by an absolutely ludicrous concept. And it actually works.
  • Ensemble Dark Horse:
    • Despite being on the sidelines for most of the time, Rain and Lady J have a sizable fanbase for being a real couple and that both of them are Exster/Liberator hybrids.
    • Meifon also has a great following due to her cheeky personality and love for money which she uses as her armor-type Arm in place of a Liberator. The fact that her voice actress is known for voicing an idol from a popular idol franchise certainly helps.
    • Momoka quickly earned this status since her introduction in Episode 9. Japan loves her due to her tragic backstory while America loves her for being undeniably gay and proactive.
  • Fan Nickname: Health & Fitness for Kouzuki and Miyasato, Jewloli for Meifong, and TOKONOME (in all caps) for Mamori.
  • Fan-Preferred Couple:
    • Meifon and Torino for having dynamic contrast, both in personality and appearance. Some shippers are hoping they are a Liberator/Exster duo.
    • Momoka and Mirei. This pairing has gained an impressive amount of support from the fanbase, although the reasons for this are different on the western and Japan fandoms. Western fans prefer this pairing because they see Momoka as the superior love interest over Mamori, while Japanese fans just wants to see Momoka happy.
    • Charlotte and Kasumi. A fan favorite over the Belligerent Sexual Tension fans perceives all of their interactions. The pairing received a considerable boost when it was revealed the characters would have a duet song included as the bonus for the home release.
    • Charlotte and Ange. Another favorite due Ange being one of the few persons Charlotte is worried about.
    • Promotional material and the mini OVA bundled with the show's home release have shifted the fandom preferences:
      • Kasumi and Hibiki got a considerable boost after Kasumi's mini OVA, where is shown Kasumi is head over heels for Hibiki and Hibiki was outed as a Covert Pervert
      • A short story revealed that Akira had a girlfriend named Haruka before being sent to Mermaid. Fans absolutely loved this new pairing and expressed very vocally their disappointing at this crucial bit of information being excluded from the show proper (Although Akira's mini-OVA alluded to this story)
      • A tweet from the series Director depicting Mirei, Mamori AND Momoka as a family immediately drove the fandom into overdrive. Now One True Threesome is the favorite resolution for those characters
  • Funny Moments:
    • Giant!Nimi busting into the castle and giving Charlotte the scare of her life.
    • Heelhold, or rather Akira's reaction to the posters and memorabilia of the Governeur Mamori has strewn all over her room. Her expression is priceless.
  • Harsher in Hindsight: All the '15 Years Old' jokes about Mirei become a bit less funny when it's implied that it's the result of her status as an Artificial Human and/or Super-Soldier.
  • Hilarious in Hindsight: Yuka Iguchi voices a young girl who once got pummeled by a dark-skinned blonde female villain. Here, she voices a dark-skinned blonde heroine who protects a young girl.
  • I Knew It!: A lot of fans have assumed that Akira is also a female due to his androgynous appearance and his feminine voice months before the anime aired. And they were right all along.
  • Launcher of a Thousand Ships: Momoka who gets paired with Mirei, Mamori, and Charlotte.
    • Charlotte herself gets paired with nearly every other character in the cast.
  • LGBT Fanbase: The series has gained a notorious following among lesbians, to the surprise of its creators that were aiming towards the male demographic with the huge emphasis on fanservice present in the series.
  • Memetic Mutation:
    • 10kg breasts, in reference to Lady J's absurd breast weight that is stated in her character profile.
    • 15 years old, in reference to how well developed Mirei is for her age.
    • Virgin-chan/Virgin. Most people on the internet use the term to talk about Mamori rather than her actual name.
  • Moe: Mamori. She has her detractors, but for her fans, Mamori's optimism combined with her child-like appearance makes for an evenly adorable and benevolent heroine.
  • Moral Event Horizon:
    • Episode 4. While she could have believably denied any knowledge of Nukui's tendencies, Charlotte knew full well what the illusion duo's MO was when sending them after Mirei, against Akira's orders. In doing so, she has shown that she's willing and able to stoop to outright rape, physical and mental, in order to beat people into submission, just to sate her own ego.
    • Charlotte waves her arms around like a helicopter yelling "Wahoo" in episode 10 as she smugly and happily dives right through another one by telling the Adell to "motivate" Kasumi to fight Mirei.
    • Momoka crossed it in episode 11 when she violates Mamori so she can use Mamori's powers for her own gain.
  • Most Wonderful Sound: The warbling, semi-mechanical "AAAAAAAAH" that Mamori makes upon completing her transformation.
  • Viewer Gender Confusion: Despite Akira's profile stating that he's the only male on the island, a lot of viewers assumed he is also female. This is most likely due to his androgynous appearance. However, strangely enough, his three sizes (Bust/waist/hip measurements) are given in the official profile, which is not normally precised for male characters, indicating possible foreshadowing of Akira's true gender. Episode 7 puts an end to this when "he" is indeed a woman.
  • The Woobie:
    • Mamori. She gets taken from her home and parents and sent to an island, by complete strangers, in broad daylight right in her school! Utterly confused by her situation, she then gets attacked with a powerful firearm for no real reason. The one person who comes to her rescue, Mirei, gropes and fondles her, causing her to experience blackouts. It isn't until Kazumi shows her an explicit video of herself that she learns why. Immediately after that, with no time to recover, she gets put into a wedding dress, handed off to Nukui, again a complete stranger, and almost gets raped. There's also a flashback of her being bullied at her old school because rather than being quarantined immediately, apparently her medical results about an irregularity are made public.
    • Mirei. The more we gleam about her backstory, the more horrific it seems. While the chronology is not yet clear, as a young teen (she's 15 now), she was in a war zone, fighting for her life against a rather sizable army of Humongous Mecha, and winning. She only lost because she hesitated to kill a terrified soldier who collapsed to his knees in front of her after she ripped apart the mecha he was riding like a soup can, and she got hit with a significant barrage of missiles from behind. This not only left her grievously wounded and unable to resist but separated her from her blue-haired partner whom she clearly treasured. Immediately after the Organization decides she is of litte use to them if she cannot kill and is sent to be disposed of. After getting the vaguest hint of good luck when a scientist smuggled her out before she was executed for her failure, she used her powers to protect a young girl and was promptly captured and shipped to Mermaid via missile. Now she's the target of Welter, especially Charlotte, who will stop at nothing to beat her down and brutalize her for actually daring to fight back and win. Episode 8 also reveals that she was the unwilling test subject in a deliberate Living Weapon project and that the "research" is still ongoing. Episode 11 reveals the full extent of it, and it's more horrific than just about anything one can imagine.
    • Momoka goes right into Woobie, Destroyer of Worlds territory when her Dark and Troubled Past is revealed. Unfortunately, whatever sympathy she may have had is completely lost the moment she decides to ignore her orders and make Mamori "her treasure," all purely for the sake of venting her hatred of "The Organization" on Mirei before announcing her explicit intention to slaughter innocent people with Mamori.
