YMMV / Valkyrie Drive -Bhikkhuni-

Go To

  • Americans Hate Tingle: In the Japanese fanbase, Mana is one of the best-regarded characters thanks to her Woobie status, Moe design, and for sharing her seiyuu with Yumi. In America, however, she is the most polarizing character due to the questionable actions she does throughout the story, or just because some players can't stand her bitchy attitude.
  • Audience-Alienating Premise: Just like its sister series, a lot of people wrote off this series simply by the fanservice and character design, with some even seeing it like an inferior clone to Senran Kagura using only the yuri aspect to sell.
    • In an unusual example of this trope, XSEED itself wrote off this series due to this, leading to Pqube taking over localization duties for the West.
  • Awesome Music: Blind Drive, the opening theme, is the Overdrive of the game and is just as great to listen to. The theme makes a comeback in the final fight against Koharu for a perfect usage of Theme Music Power-Up.
  • Base-Breaking Character:
    • Mana gets this treatment a lot among Western fans. While some are willing to give her some leniency by acknowledging she was dealt a pretty crappy hand by the plot, others firmly believe she has no redeeming qualities and that everything that goes wrong on the plot is her fault.
    • Although to a lesser degree than Mana, Manpukumaru is also a victim of this trope. Some fans enjoy her single-mindedness and honest nature while others find those exact characteristics irritating and shallow.
  • Best Known for the Fanservice: The lesbian elements in the game are such a well-known aspect by the audience that Pqube even worked with them on their promotion for the game.
  • Broken Base: The writing on this game is pretty polarizing, it's either well-written and one of the best scenarios Takaki has developed since the original Senran Kagura Burst, or a cliché-filled slog that fails to be as interesting as SK.
  • Fandom Rivalry: With the Senran Kagura fandom oddly enough. Mainly present in the western fandom where a lot of players who became disappointed over SK's direction with its later titles, found Bhikkhuni to be a better take on the SK formula and having that "spark" they think SK has lost over the years.
  • Fan-Preferred Couple: Viola and Koharu are pretty popular among Western fans thanks to their dynamic.
  • Game-Breaker:
    • Using Momo as the Liberator and Manpukumaru as the Extar. Momo's attack power, while not great, is still high enough to cause considerable amounts of damage and it's only helped by her high speed and impressive range. Manpukumaru being the Extar gives Momo a significant increase in damage because Manpukumaru has the highest damage bonus as an Extar. This results in Momo turning from a Fragile Speedster into a Glass Cannon that can shred through her opposition in mere seconds. This also makes getting SS ranks as well as the fights against the Four Pillar Gods a lot easier.
    • Ranka's Drive Break is pretty much an "I Win" button on Melee Mode.
  • Goddamned Boss: Gundari is the most irritating boss in the game thanks to her "Get Back Here!" Boss tendencies.
  • Just Here for Godzilla: Many Japanese players only got the game due to Mirei and Mamori being available as DLC.
  • Launcher of a Thousand Ships: Momo gets paired with all the girls in the cast by the fans.
  • Moment of Awesome: The concept itself qualifies for this trope but special mention goes to Manpukumaru's Final Drive: carpet bombing the enemy with ice cream cones made of boulders falling from orbit.
  • Scrappy Mechanic: Phantom Delude's timing for activation is so strict that nearly nobody bothers to use it beyond the tutorial (if they can even activate it there), leading to a lot of frustration when one of the game challenges asks you to perform three of this in succession.
  • That One Achievement:
    • Experienced Girls asks you to gather a whooping of 5 million experience points when you will barely be past the 1 million mark after finishing the entire story, thus needing a ridiculous amount of grinding to get. It doesn't help that you can only get experience points through Story mode.
    • Many players hit a wall with the Phantom Delude Challenge while trying to earn the Challenge Accepted trophy.
  • That One Boss:
    • Gundari during the fight against her in either Chaos 20-C or Order 20-B. Her attacks not only hurt but she's also a ridiculous case of a "Get Back Here!" Boss because of her flight attack. And if you do manage to close the distance? She will use a powerful Spin Attack that will completely shred your health bar.
    • Rinka's fight on Chaos 20-A is a massive difficulty spike for most players, especially those who grew complacent over the free use of Drive Breaks to tear through enemies. Since the only enemy you face in the stage is Rinka, you aren't able to stock on Synchro Bars to activate Drive, forcing you to use the basic combo of Ranka to defeat her sister. To rub salt in the wound, Rinka is able to activate Final Drive at any point of the fight (even at the start) heavily skewing the odds against the player.
  • Theiss Titillation Theory: This seems to be the entire idea behind Viola's outfit, along with a number of the DLC outfits.
  • The Woobie:
    • For all her ambition, Mana is continuously on the receiving end of most bad things throughout the story. From Momo's utter contempt to the lack of a consistent partner most of the time, and finally, has her hopes and dreams completely crushed regardless of the ending route.
    • Momo's attitude becomes much more understandable when taking into account her past as a Child Soldier.
  • Vanilla Protagonist: While not badly written, Rinka is quickly overshadowed by the other characters due to having, relatively, the most straightforward characterization.
  • Wake-Up Call Boss: The last fight against Rinka on the Chaos route is the first time you face a boss without having the advantage of building synchro stocks beforehand nor having healing items on the stage, so a lot of players are taken by surprise when Rinka demolishes their health in a matter of seconds.
