YMMV / Unicorn: Warriors Eternal

Go To

  • Alternative Character Interpretation: In the first episode, Merlin almost seemed indifferent to the idea that Melinda nearly died. Was it due to the fact he still blames her for what happened to her mother? Or was he simply putting up a front?
  • Awesome Art: A standard from Genndy Tartakovsky. The series combines hand-drawn animation and the character design style of Western/Eastern animation of the past, creating a phenomenal series.
  • Demographically Inappropriate Humour: In episode 3, an army of stone soldiers straight up get castrated, granted they didn't show what was actually being cut off. Zig-zagged, since it's officially an Adult Swim show, but this was originally made for prime-time Cartoon Network and still seems to be aimed at a younger audience than the rest of the shows on Adult Swim. And it certainly isn't the first time one of Tartakovsky's more children-focused works had such things.
  • Evil Is Cool: The Lady Fox rarely engages in combat directly, but when she does she pulls of some show stopping feats of magic and martial prowess that are incredibly cool to witness, such as firing a street lamp like an arrow, and fighting off a group of police men in a Batman-like mix of stealth and martial arts.
  • Harsher in Hindsight: Merlin being apathetic towards Melinda's near-death in the first episode becomes even worse in the fifth episode when it is revealed that Melinda is his daughter, and he blames her for accidentally causing his wife/her mother to becoming the Evil the Warriors need to fight.
  • Memetic Mutation: Thanks to the series' art style, everyone quickly compared Emma's design to Betty Boop.
  • Popular with Furries:
    • The show has a mysterious villainous literal vixen with Shadowed Face, Glowing Eyes and wearing a form-fitting Victorian-era dress that accentuates her Hartman Hips. Unsurprisingly the furries almost immediately became infatuated with her.
    • The episode "Darkness Before Dawn" introduces both the Rakshasa, who looks like a buff humanoid tiger, and Winston's similarly buff werewolf form, for further furry appeal.
  • They Wasted a Perfectly Good Character: Out of three main members of Unicorn, Alfie/Seng gets the least attention and character development. While much time is devoted to detailing the histories of Melinda and Edred, Seng's backstory is never revealed. Of course, it's entirely possible this is planned for Season 2. Alfie/Seng has also spent twenty years in the Cosmic Realm on his own and has aged significantly, but none of his experiences there are shown.
  • They Wasted a Perfectly Good Plot: The show isn't without its share of criticism from the viewers, mostly related to certain plot elements that get introduced and then quickly get swept away:
    • Inspector General Hastings spends most of his on-screen time being an open skeptic regarding the involvement of supernatural, dismissing it as nonsense. However, once he finally confronts June the fox woman and realizes that there are indeed magical beings running around and causing trouble, he never shows up again after the church fight.
    • Both June Way and Otto are implied to have a bigger role in the grand scheme of things, with June even hinted at having a personal stake in the conflict during episode 5 and Otto is all but stated to have worked with her at some point as she knows the location of his flying fortress and how to fix his robots, and Otto was the one who paid off the old sailor to point Scotland Yard towards her hideout. However, their pasts remain a mystery as both are unceremoniously Killed Off for Real halfway through the first season.
  • The Woobie:
    • Emma. She grew up with Good Parents and was about to be married to her childhood friend only for Copernicus to interrupt her wedding and reincarnate her as Melinda, making Emma wonder how much of her prior life was real.
Emma: This day. This day was supposed to be different, special. That place, those people, that boy. Winston? My parents? Were they my parents? How can I not know?!
    • Melinda didn’t have an easy life either. She was once a happy child and grew up with her father Merlin and mother Morgana. That is, until her mother discovered she had magic and wanted it gone. In the struggle, Melinda's uncontrolled magic caused Morgana to be subsumed by the first incarnation of the Evil and fled, with Merlin blaming Melinda for what happened.
    • Alfie counts as well. He’s an orphan and continued living in the abandoned ruins of his orphanage for years, fighting for survival with other orphan boys as his only family.
    • Poor Winston. He's all set to marry the woman he loves only to see her ripped away by this war on Evil and reincarnation. He's a nice guy who only wants to help Emma but gets pushed away and by the end of episode 2, gets seriously injured by her powers. And after being left stranded on the ocean, Winston encounters a strange man who turns out to be a werewolf and bites him, turning him into one as well.
