YMMV / Twisted Metal (2023)

Go To

  • Accidental Innuendo: The world premier trailer became somewhat infamous due to the scene of Sweet Tooth pressing John up against a machine in a way that looks rather suggestive (and is the trailer thumbnail at that).
  • And You Thought It Would Fail: Fans of the games predicted disaster from the moment the first details were revealed, criticizing its changes to the source material, its more humorous tone, and its lack of Vehicular Combat and Calypso. When the show finally premiered, however, while fans of the games weren't unanimous in their praise, many still found it far better than they expected, appreciating the numerous Mythology Gags to the games and a campy B-Movie tone that hearkened back to the first four games in the series and Twisted Metal: Head-On. Many scratched their heads as to why the trailers seemingly focused on the worst parts of the show. More importantly, it became the biggest comedy premiere that the streaming service Peacock ever had.
  • Crosses the Line Twice: Marcus brutally killing his dog co-star because it was upstaging him is horrific but learning later that the dog managed to upstage Marcus again because the dog's funeral garnered more viewers than Marcus' trial makes it darkly funny.
  • Fridge Brilliance: John is so happy-go-lucky and wisecracking because of his amnesia. Unlike everyone else, he can't remember what he lost before the apocalypse hit.
  • Genius Bonus:
    • Stone praises a New York cop named Bratton, whose "broken windows" policing theory meant harshly punishing minor crimes to avoid normalizing major crimes. Considering Stone is an authoritarian Rabid Cop, this is probably meant as a Take That!.
    • The Convoy say "Stack them eights" to Granny Dread at her funeral. It's trucker lingo for "So long, good luck."
    • "All the Things She Said" by t.A.T.u. plays at the end of Episode 4 while Miranda calls Amber, confirming to the audience that their relationship was romantic. The "All the Things She Said" music video was controversial for depicting a lesbian kiss.
  • Heartwarming Moments:
    • Stu having a change of heart and rescuing John and Quiet.
    • John and Quiet bonding by watching Blankman and, because there's no sound, dubbing in their own lines.
    • Granny's last moments, funeral, and eulogy. Then Twister calling Flower Power for the first time after their breakup at Granny's urging.
    • Quiet sneaking into Topeka to kill Stone and avenge her brother all while a hallucination of her brother urges her to stop.
    • Quiet's reunion with Loud in "DRVTHRU" after years of enslavement. She's so traumatized that she can't speak but laughs when he brags about farting on his boss' lunch.
  • Older Than They Think: Many were upset at the trailer of Sweet Tooth being extremely silly during the fight with John such as singing "The Thong Song", showing that these viewers were only familiar with the Black and reboot versions of Sweet Tooth. The original incarnations of Sweet Tooth had him asking for his reward for completing the tournament was such silly things as a paper bag, being turned into a bug, and eating all the sweets he wants.
  • Tear Jerker:
    • Sweet Tooth confronting his parents' corpses in Blackfield Asylum. He was happy as a small-time child actor but they forced him to try out for the sitcom out of greed. He was overshadowed by his dog co-star and killed him in front of an audience. His parents sent him to Blackfield Asylum and ignored him until the apocalypse, when he was able to escape, capture them, and leave them in his cell to rot.
    • John's reaction to Evelyn being destroyed, complete with flashbacks about how he found her as a child and made that car into a home. Said flashback sequences are set to “My Immortal”, itself a Tear Jerker. The episode even ends on Silent Credits to further emphasis the sadness.
    • John getting the package to New San Francisco only to learn that Quiet can't come in with him. He tries to refuse but she shoots him in the shoulder and forces him to go inside.
