YMMV / Trolls Band Together

Go To

  • Abandon Shipping:
    • Poppy/Barb was a very popular ship at the time of World Tour and for a long time Barb was almost exclusively shipped with Poppy. However, once this film was released the ship saw a significant loss of support due Poppy and Branch had become an Official Couple and shared a The Big Damn Kiss in the end, which made it more common to write Poppy and Barb as best friends. It also doesn't help that the film also introduces Viva who is Genki Girl with a tomboyish personality similar to Barb.
    • A once fairly popular ship, Floyd x Veneer has lost supporters because of the age difference between Floyd and Veneer, with the latter being a teenager.
  • Alternative Character Interpretation: While Viva is taken aback when Poppy reveals that the Pop Trolls have befriended the Bergens, she also looks visibly hurt when Poppy talks about all the fun sisterly things she and Bridget do together, and becomes even more adamant in refusing to let her go. Does Viva simply not believe Poppy's story and is doubling down on protecting her sister, or is she now acting out of spite due to Poppy apparently "replacing" her with Bridget?
  • And You Thought It Would Fail: Most people believed that Trolls 3 would bomb at the theater and be overshadowed by the more anticipated Ruby Gillman, Teenage Kraken, only for the latter film to end up a disappointment financial wise (but did get a decent reception from critics) while Trolls Band Together had a better box-office reception.
  • Ass Pull:
    • The existence of famous troll pop bands was never alluded to in the previous films. World Tour implied that the main tribe were unaware of other trolls living outside their village, while this film reveals that Poppy idolized BroZone and grew up listening to their music.
      • It's implied and mentioned that there were other Pop Troll Villages at one point before Trollstice and much of their history and culture was wiped out when the Bergens reduced their population to just one Troll Tree and during the escape from Bergen Town, they had to leave behind a lot to escape.
    • While it's established that Branch was only a baby when BroZone went their separate ways, before he swore off singing completely following his grandmother's death, it's revealed in the Dance Party Ending that he was also in a certain other boy band at some point in his adult years, despite this never being mentioned at any other point in either this film or the rest of the franchise.
  • Crack Ship:
    • Floyd/Creek has a sizable following, even though Creek has not appeared since the first film mainly because he would be an Angel/Devil Shipping.
    • Viva/Barb has gained traction with numerous fanart depicting them as an Opposites Attract couple or Barb having an Love at First Sight on Viva.
    • John Dory/Delta Dawn has its fans.
  • Demographically Inappropriate Humour: When Bridget and Gristle are captured by the Putt-Putt Trolls, Bridget says "I didn't think we'd both find ourselves tied up on this honeymoon." Even the DreamWorks TikTok account points this out.
  • Designated Hero: Floyd is portrayed as The Heart of the brothers and Branch admits that if there was a brother he didn't disown is him, but no one seems to address the fact that he also abandoned Branch, made a bit worse by the fact that he was aware of Branch's feelings and that he decided to leave immediately after all of the other brothers left while giving him a flimsy excuse to stick around. It probably would have helped if we knew what he was up to during their time apart.
  • Draco in Leather Pants: Many fans portray Veneer as this due to him being the more sympathetic of the two. These fans often ignore how willing Veneer was to take advantage of the trolls and instead portray him as an innocent man who was manipulated by Velvet.
  • Evil Is Cool: Velvet and Veneer have been consistently praised as the coolest and most enjoyable villains in the franchise to date due to their dramatic/hilarious/Love to Hate personalities and their Rubberhose Limbs designs. They steal the scenes they are in, with Veneer especially pulling a Heel–Face Turn at the end. Their villain songs "Mount Rageous" is also considered one of the catchiest songs in the movie.
  • Fandom Heresy: Certain fans will react negatively to Floyd and/or Veneer being shipped with women, since they're both Ambiguously Gay. Doesn't stop Floyd/Viva or Floyd/Barb from having its supporters.
  • Fandom-Specific Plot:
    • A very popular plot is that it is Branch who is captured by Velvet and Veneer instead of Floyd, which leads to Poppy discovering Branch's hidden past and rallying his brothers to rescue him. To a lesser extent, the fact that it is another of the brothers who is captured, particularly John Dory due to his status as the The Un Favourite would make it more difficult for his brothers to want to rescue him.
    • Viva getting the Adaptational Villainy treatment is also a popular idea, making a Face–Heel Turn upset at having been cast out of her home all her life and that Poppy has a better life than her.
  • Fan Nickname: The lilac-colored Mount Rageon whom Velvet posed with was nicknamed "Orchid" by the fans.
  • Fountain of Memes: Practically every scene of Velvet and Veneer has become quotable in meme circles, especially him calling her out on them growing up in the suburbs when she tries to claim they had nothing as children.
  • Incest Yay Shipping:
    • A segment of the fandom ships Branch and his brothers with each other, dubbing it "BZCest."
    • Velvet/Veneer also has some supporters.
  • Informed Wrongness: Branch's brothers planning to go separate ways after rescuing Floyd is treated as another example of them being selfish and not taking Branch's feelings in consideration but it makes perfect sense they wouldn't live together after everything was said and done. Bruce is married and has 10 children, Clay has an important role in the community of the Putt-Putt Trolls home, so why would they abandon the places were they had established a life to get to live again with each other, especially when their relationship is shown to be hugely vitriolic? To be fair to Branch, this was probably twenty years of pent up frustration that he had to let out after they left him alone, having no one else to watch over him after their grandmother got eaten.
  • Just Here for Godzilla: Quite a few people admitted that they only watched the film for Velvet and Veneer, considering them to be far more enjoyable to watch than the heroes.
  • Launcher of a Thousand Ships: Floyd has been shipped with everyone, including Creek, Veneer, Guy Diamond, Lance Bass' trollsona Boom, Riff, Viva, Barb and even his own brothers.
  • LGBT Fanbase:
    • Like Barb before him, Floyd quickly gained several LGBT fans even before the film's release, especially since he's voiced by gay singer and actor, Troye Sivan.
    • Veneer also has a following for similar reasons, including being voiced by gay singer and actor, Andrew Rannells.
    • Another for Lance Bass' trollsona Boom, being confirmed via Word of Gay to be the first official "out" troll in the franchise".
  • Memetic Mutation: "STOP ATTACKING ME!" Explanation
  • Moe:
    • Baby Branch is The Cutie both inside and outside the universe and it's easy to love him because of this.
    • Floyd also qualifies for his cute design, Nice Guy personality and being the sensitive one of BroZone.
  • No Yay:
    • A deleted scene featured Tiny Diamond, a one-month-old baby, having a romance with Crimp, an adult (she has a degree). Because of this, the fans were glad that it was deleted.
    • A once fairly popular ship, Floyd x Veneer has lost supporters due to attention being brought to the fact that Veneer is underage and Floyd is an adult.
  • Portmanteau Couple Name:
    • Cliva (Clay/Viva)
    • Fleek (Floyd/Creek)
    • Vivarb (Viva/Barb)
    • DeltaDory or DawnDory (Delta Dawn/John Dory)
    • Ritzneer (Kid Ritz/Veneer)
    • Velchid (Velvet/"Orchid")
  • Rooting for the Empire: Even though they are talent stealing frauds who had no issues with draining innocent trolls so they could continue being famous, Velvet and Veneer are so entertaining that many fans couldn't help but find themselves rooting for them over the trolls.
  • Ron the Death Eater: Like how Veneer is often babied by the fan base, Velvet is treated as being a thousand times more evil than him. Many fans portray Velvet as a manipulative jerk who doesn’t care about and even abuses Veneer.
  • Ships That Pass in the Night:
    • Kid Ritz only interacted with Veneer while interviewing him and Velvet, but he often gets shipped with Veneer.
    • Velvet is shipped with an unnamed purple Mount Rageon (nicknamed Orchid by the fans) who she posed for a picture with.
  • Squick:
    • That it was revealed that Spruce married a woman at least fifty times his own height is one thing, but that they somehow having more than 10 children is another thing entirely.
    • Seen in and out of universe when one of Bruce's children shows him that they have pink eye. The whole rescue group is equally disgusted by it. Even Tiny's horrified.
    • Tiny Diamond offers his candy ring/pacifier thingy, which has his germs on it, a few times to Branch in the movie. Eventually, Branch does put in his mouth!
    • As noted under No Yay, the cut romance between Tiny Diamond (a one-month baby) and Crimp (an adult) was seen as questionable even during the developmental stages, leading to its exclusion from the final product.
  • They Wasted a Perfectly Good Character:
    • Floyd spends most of the film as the Distressed Dude for the main cast to save. Other than a throwaway line about a solo career, we don't get any insight into his life after BroZone disbanded, nor do we even see how he was captured by Velvet and Veneer in the first place.
    • Aside from a brief reaction from Clay, which is Played for Laughs, Branch's brothers are never shown asking or learning about Grandma Rosiepuff's death before the events of the first film, despite the opening scene implying that she was their only known caretaker.
      Clay: Wait… Grandma got eaten?
    • Despite the film introducing a long-lost sister for Poppy, whether or not she has a mother still goes completely unmentioned. The same applies to Branch's parents, since although his grandmother has a cameo in the prologue and is mentioned later, it's never referred to as to what happened to his parents.
    • Prince D and Cooper only make brief cameos this time around so we never get their perspective on the situation of Branch's brothers returning besides a brief scene. Some feel like that they or at least one of them should've came along and provided insight to Branch and Poppy over how to deal with their older siblings with Poppy relating to D or Cooper over missing out on having their sibling around.
  • They Wasted a Perfectly Good Plot: The ending completely skips over Viva's reunion with her father and the rest of her tribe, despite her being separated from them for decades. While it's jokingly Lampshaded by both Poppy and Viva, they are also never shown confronting King Peppy for keeping Viva's existence a secret from Poppy for all this time.
  • Trailer Joke Decay:
    • Nearly every commercial uses the flashback of Floyd spouting a string of boy band name-based puns as both exposition for why BroZone was going to break up and as a joke.
    • To add to this, seemingly every commercial and trailer features Tiny Diamond saying "Oooh, drama! Corn me Dinkles!" This even extended to cross promotions with other NBCUniversal properties. Nearly all their social media accounts feature a video of some characters shouting an insult before cutting to Tiny.
  • The Woobie:
    • Baby Branch, seeing him at the prologue makes you want to reach through the screen and give him a hug.
    • Crimp, Velvet and Veneer's assistant who is constantly pushed around and insulted by them. Even when she successfully invents a device to help make smoothies faster, Velvet locks her in a closet for the heinous crime of supposedly being smarter than she was, apparently giving her enough reason not to trust her.
