YMMV / Triple Threat (2019)

Go To

  • Complete Monster: Collins is an aloof and bloodthirsty mercenary leader who arranges for the slaughter of Jaka's village to engineer his own escape from captivity, even targeting the other prisoners to cover his tracks. Hired by a mob boss to assassinate heiress Tian Xiao Xian, Collins attacks, killing her guards and goes on to murder a group of police officers in his way. Having to negotiate with Payu and Long Fei, two of his men he had previously abandoned, Collins seemingly barters for Xiao Xian while truly intending to kill all of them, indulging his bloodlust and profiting from it.
  • Evil Is Cool: Collins and his fellow mercenaries may be psychopaths with little to no regard for human life, but they are undeniably fierce combatants who put up a good fight against the main characters.
  • Magnificent Bastard: Jaka pursues Collins and his mercenaries in the hopes of avenging his village and wife. Recognizing the defectors Long Fei and Payu at an illegal fighting match, Jaka gets them drunk and has them arrested in order to lure the mercenaries to the police station for a confrontation, aiding the defectors in neutralizing two mercenaries in the process. Later talking his way into the mercenary crew, Jaka lets the defectors escape with the heiress Tian Xiao Xian when he encounters them. In the final confrontation, Jaka assists the defectors in eliminating the mercenaries before informing the Chinese Embassy that Xiao Xian is safe.
  • They Wasted a Perfectly Good Plot: Considering the sheer awesomeness of so many modern martial arts stars sharing a film, some have the perception that the movie's choregraphy was oddly undistinct for what it should have been. The cast includes backgrounds in Taekwondo and jujutsu (Adkins), Muay Thai (Jaa), Silat (Uwais), wushu (Chen), Karate (White) and Mixed Martial Arts (Bisping), yet all of them fight in a rather similar generic kung fu style and only a trained eye can really spot differences between their body languages. It's inevitable to think that the movie committed a huge waste of creativity and character building by not putting every man to faithfully model his fighting style on his own.
