YMMV / Tower Unite

Go To

  • Awesome Music: William "Dongle" Smith made up for the loss of the GMod Tower soundtrack with his own pieces that are appropriate to the game, such as Virus still maintaining a TimeSplitters vibe, or Little Crusaders having a more fantasy feel with a few elements of the game which inspired the original mode.
    • The music for Accelerate's Bedzoom. Despite it being a nightcore version of a pre-existing song by William, it's proven to be quite popular as it captures the atmosphere of such a carefree and colorful level. It's to the point where it has a hand in why Bedzoom is one of the most popular maps in addition to its design and layout.
    • The theme for "GLXY" from Ball Race is an amazing trance-house mix and captures the brightness and color of the map perfectly.
    • The music for Halloween plaza minigames manage to contrast the Halloween plaza's eerie atmosphere by providing a playful track that still invokes the Halloween spirit. Depending on the player, it can be a breath of fresh air.
  • Broken Base: Is Tower Unite a worthy successor to GMod Tower? On one hand, the switch to a different engine allows for better graphics, much more control over designing mini-games and areas and allows for higher player counts (not to mention allowing the devs to pay their bills by being able to legally sell their game). On the other hand, there are those unhappy that several mini-games had to have their serial numbers filed off for legal reasons, the loss of copyrighted cosmetics for player avatarsnote  and the fact that Tower Unite is infamously buggy and possess long load times in any given version. With all this in mind, opinions are split if shutting down GMod Tower for Tower Unite was a good thing or not.
  • Demonic Spiders: Zombie Massacre has a few enemies, which while may not appear as often as other enemies, can make short work of you if you're not careful, or if they corner you among normal enemies. Which means on later days, hearing their sound cues mean it's a good idea to be on your guard and/or run. It's also highly recommended you take them out as soon as possible.
    • Vampires are capable of being just as fast as a player at default speed, and they will relentlessly target a player once they see one. On top of being able to quickly kill, they closely resemble the normal zombies, with the only difference being a faint red glow, different animations, and making ghastly snarls. All these traits easily make them one of the most dangerous enemies in the game.
    • Exploding Pumpkins (which are basically Beheaded Kamikazes) may be easily defeated from a distance thanks to their brightly glowing heads and their lengthy spawn animation, but that doesn't make them any less dangerous. On top of being able to outspeed a player at default speed, one explosion can chop away about half of your health, so you best hope you're not getting overrun by zombies if you let one slip. Also, if their nature isn't obvious enough already, it's unwise to fight them with a melee weapon, as they will most likely explode within the effective range of one.
    • Werewolves, which appear on the "Village" and "Nightyard" maps, are about as fast and powerful as vampires, except they have more health, and multiple can quickly appear in succession. Be ready to kite or use your most powerful weapons, as hordes of them are about as dangerous as they sound. Oh, and they also frequently appear in the boss stage of Village, so good luck multitasking with them around.
  • Funny Moments: The game has plenty of these from its item descriptions to the condo "commercials". Some notably funny ones are:
    • During Halloween, a gravestone in the plaza just simply says "Canvas Not Set", poking at empty canvas items that are otherwise only seen in Condos.
    • Another one has the deceased are Zombie Hunters of but minutes into the future, basically a humorous jab at would-be players of Zombie Massacre while also implying a boundless grave. The eulogy also says "Either being mauled to death by Werewolf or turned if (un?)lucky". The first half humorously lampshades the enemy's status as a Demonic Spider as mentioned above, and the other is a witty example of Black Comedy.
  • Goddamned Bats: Zombie Massacre has the Ghosts, which were added in 0.8.4.0 along with the "Village" map. Their form of attack is a throwable wisp when you're in their line of sight, making them the only enemy in the game by far (not counting The Queen) with a projectile. They can also hide for a bit before attacking again. Because of these, they can be a pain, but thankfully they're just as easy to kill as a normal zombie.
  • Most Wonderful Sound:
    • "SUNSHINE DAY~!" note , the game's sound for an unlocked achievement. It can be very gratifying to hear, especially if you just completed the requirements for a difficult achievement.
    • Numerous sounds in the Arcade, such as winning the jackpot or bonuses can be this. Special mention goes to Coin River's high pitched "YIPPEE!". It being a coin pusher machine, this activates the temporary coin gun after lights that spell out "RIVER!" are activated, which signals that you can send coins to any part of your choosing and begin to potentially rake in a lot of tickets.
    • Little Crusaders has two depending on who you're playing as. As the Knights, the "Snap! Click!" of pushing the Dragon's button is satisfying. Conversely, as Dragon, the "[Thud] WUAAAAHHHHH!!!" of chomping or pancaking a Knight is grimly satisfying.
  • Nightmare Fuel:
    • Virus can be this at times if a bunch of survivors get infected at once, easily throwing everyone into a panic. It can also be the case for the last survivor trying to avoid the infected when there's lots of players. Even moreso if there's still a lot of time left.
    • Zombie Massacre is easily the most ominous of the game worlds by far. While it has a survival aspect ala Left 4 Dead, there are some eerie sounds and visuals. The vampire and queen boss can also be a bit creepy for first time players.
    • For an otherwise very lighthearted game, The Halloween event is where the game can be at its creepiest. Even as soon as you boot up the game, the main menu theme is replaced with an ominous humming noise, with an occasional deepened Evil Laugh. Additionally, the bright backgrounds now have a blood red overlay with a black fog scrolling by.
    • For the plaza, while there's still festive decorations and the plaza buildings still look as colorful as ever, it will always be nighttime no matter how much time passes, and the same kind of eerie droning noise from the menu also plays whenever you're outside. As of 2021, a haze now occupies the outdoors, which adds an extra layer of eeriness. The ocean waters used to turn to blood, but this was done away with that same year.
    • Dark Voyage, a simulated Rail Shooter dark ride added in 0.16.3.0, takes the cake for being the most nightmarish thing in the entire game by far. The areas the ride takes you through get increasingly creepy, and even then, the first areas have some eerie ambience to them despite being a western ghost town with jack-o-lanterns and cardboard ghost targets.
      • Special mention in the first area goes to a Surprisingly Creepy Moment where after you turn a corner, there's a wall plastered with huge eyeballs strung together by what appears to be veins. While you can shoot them for points, it's still creepy.
      • The second area starts you in a dark forest that leads into a mansion, with no more lighthearted decor in sight. In addition to the ghosts, spiders now appear leading up to the mansion. Once inside, numerous monstrosities await, like zombies munching on some flesh, a pot full of body parts, some monster with a Lamprey Mouth, ghost paintings, and a fleshy mass with eyeballs on it. One particular ghost painting summons some ghosts for you to shoot, but not before the lighting shifts to darkness with some flashing red as the painting also changes to an unsettling appearance with a Scare Chord. Afterwards, you pass through a basement, which is a laboratory with some werewolves in it.
      • Finally, you pass through hell. While it does turn into an exhilarating coaster segment at the end, there's still the nightmarish imagery you'd expect: A pentagram, winged creatures, and a depiction of the devil itself.
  • That One Sidequest: The Wowozela, an item which is only obtainable with tickets from the arcade. It is the most expensive of the arcade prizes, costing a whopping 2,500,000 tickets. Its price is likely justified since it's actually a port of an existing addon for Garry's Mod note . Getting it means you were determined as hell with sinking time into the arcade to get it, as it's commonly estimated that it can take about a day (as in about a full 24 hours) to get the needed amount of tickets from consistently playing well on the highest paying arcade machines.note  Essentially, it's the one of the closest things the game has to a Bragging Rights Reward, especially since it's capable of making sounds heard nowhere else in the game as described on the Shout-Out page. Good luck if you're a competitionist and want to fill out the Arcade section of your collection book.
    • This has been mitigated now that Double Fishing EXP/Arcade Ticket events now randomly/automatically occur every weekend, as opposed to being a single weekend that would be announced in advance (and what weekend will host which events are even on the plaza calendar). As such, this slices the ~24 hour grind in half, making it ~12 hours. While it makes obtaining the Wowozela easier, it still takes some dedication nonetheless.
  • Sidetracked by the Gold Saucer: A less positive example, where players learned that the casino was a dull, yet easy way to make a reliable amount of money. The developers addressed this in 0.3.5.0 by greatly increasing the payout of both the Game Worlds and the minigames, giving players a much greater incentive to play them instead of relying on slot machines for currency. It didn't help that, at the time, the Casino was one of the only other places to really do anything outside of Game Worlds.
    • The Arcade provides a much more positive example seeing as the prizes can only be earned via tickets along with a greater variety of gameplay in the machines.
