YMMV / Total Xtreme Island

  • Abandon Shipping:
    • Gareth and Sage were heavily shipped at one point due to becoming allies. This was basically completely sunk in episode 20.
    • In a lesser example, since plenty still ship them, Hazel and Kaden's ship lost a lot of steam after Kaden began a canonical relationship with Devereux.
  • Alas, Poor Scrappy:
    • Even his biggest haters admit that Devereux's injuries in episode 15 were so bad, that they couldn't help but feel bad for The Sociopath.
    • Max's elimination has actually caused quite a few people to feel bad for him, despite a lukewarm reception at best.
  • Arc Fatigue:
    • Giselle's entire plot as the Big Bad Wannabe is largely seen as annoying to get through and bland.
    • Izaya's return as a non-contestant during the merge and subsequent stay as a supporting character, while largely decently received, is widely agreed to have lasted far too long.
  • Ass Pull: Sally's elimination in a nutshell.
  • Base-Breaking Character:
    • Hyde is this in literally every way for VERY obvious reasons. It largely relies on whether you find his twisted sense of humor entertaining.
    • Kaden is potentially the most base-breaking character in the entire season. People either think he's an amusing Big Bad Wannabe Camp Gay, while a lot more seem to find him an offensive and outright unlikable prick. As of recent, he's beginning to border on becoming The Scrappy.
  • Cargo Ship: Hazel and his wand, Alexander the 24th.
  • Creator's Pet: Fuzzboy has admitted to Izaya and Juvia becoming this upon becoming the co-writer, which he looks back on with heavy regret.
  • Ensemble Dark Horse:
    • Hazel was confirmed as this when he won the most popular character as revealed in episode four.
    • Due to his importance to the story and large amount of screentime, people have really grown to like Isaac, and to a lesser extent Yu.
    • After his unexpected early elimination, Izaya became this, with some starting to like him due to his Only Sane Man personality. His girlfriend Juvia also is popular due to her Hidden Depths and friendly personality. As of the merge, this could be debated due to Arc Fatigue.
    • Tempest, due to becoming an Ascended Extra in the merge, and allowing everyone to realize how funny she could be.
    • Bari is well-liked by the fanbase due to his The Scrappy status In-Universe, being seen as a sympathetic protagonist.
    • Decker is already decently popular for being a Nice Guy and his love of music.
    • As far as non-contestants go, Doc is BELOVED by the fandom for being a misunderstood Nice Guy, for his Ship Tease with Mimi, and just plan being hilarious.
  • Flat Character: Among the cast of both seasons, Jet and Sally are overall seen as bland, uninteresting, boring to read, and just plain boring.
  • Fountain of Memes: Tyranitar has caused quite a few.
  • Ho Yay:
    • Some interpret Hazel and Izaya's scenes like this...For some reason.
    • Isaac and Yu
  • Nausea Fuel: SO MUCH IN THE EARLY EPISODES!
  • One-Episode Wonder: Doc was this in SPADES! He's by far the most popular one-episode character in the entire cast, and Zetsu is also fondly remembered for his relationship with Tempest. They were popular enough to become ascended extras and return in the rest of the loser episodes.
  • Rescued from the Scrappy Heap:
    • Thunder, who spent basically the entire series being a gigantic Jerkass, gained a boost in popularity in the eliminated campers episode, after he told off Giselle and apologized to Ashley.
    • Hyde has recently grown a surprising following.
    • Devereux was actually meant to be an intentional version of The Scrappy, and it did indeed work at first. However, as of episode 23 and ever since his and Kaden's ship became so widely popular, he isn't nearly as hated now.
  • The Scrappy:
    • Giselle is largely considered a very boring and one-note villain who completely lacks a real personality.
    • Gareth, post Faceā€“Heel Turn, as he's now seen as a pathetic and ultimately generic villain.
    • Sally and Jet, due to their rather bland and completely forgettable personalities.
  • Slow-Paced Beginning: Episodes 1-14 are largely not looked upon fondly by the community, citing bland characters, a lack of real development, a lot of missed opportunities, disgusting imagery, etc. Episodes 15-26 are seen as an improvement, but have their own large share of problems.
  • Squick: Multiple episodes, but episode 1 is a standout due to just how FAR it goes with it.
  • They Wasted a Perfectly Good Plot:
    • The love triangle between Isaac, Reyna, and Yu felt like it never ended with a proper conclusion, and many feel it should have been handled better in general.
    • Kaden's crush on Gareth and his view on his own homosexuality makes many believe he could have been an infinitely more interesting character. Too bad it's never really expanded on.
    • Hazel, Izaya, and Juvia working together to take out the antagonists is dropped after one episode, leaving many rather depressed, as they thought it could have been a really fun plot line. Inverted with Izaya's return in the merge, though even then, the actual quality of the plot could be debated.
    • Sage's alliance as a whole felt half-baked and rushed, which is sad when people actually preferred it over Kaden's alliance as a whole.
    • Juvia not doing anything after Izaya's elimination felt incredibly disappointing to her fans. Inverted by the merge, where Fuzzboy made her become an Ascended Extra due to being so Out of Focus.
    • For some, Giselle discovering Izaya's existence on the island after his elimination ONLY to get eliminated that episode.
    • Max breaking down from everyone pushing him felt rushed to many people.
    • Many believe Ace becoming much more cut-throat after losing both of his Morality Pet(His sister, Ashley, and his "girlfriend", Cynthia) could have been handled much better. His conflict with Max is also seen as this.
  • What Do You Mean, It's Not for Kids?: The series is rated T...It REALLY shouldn't be that low. Basically everyone agrees it's an M-rated story disguised with a T-rating for literally no real reason.
  • Win Back the Crowd: After episode 8, a lot of fans begun to stop reading, or at least weren't nearly as supportive. Episode 15 won many readers back.
