YMMV / 'Til Death Do Us Blart

Go To

  • Alternate Character Interpretation: Given the limited material they have to work with and the nature of the podcast, the hosts come up with a lot of speculation on the nature of the characters:
    • Is Paul Blart a caring father (albeit not a good one) or is he abusive towards Maya? Is he an immortal demigod, a constantly tortured Job-esque figure, a misogynistic creep, a multidimensional traveler, or all of the above?
    • Is the Shadow Man really behind all of Paul Blart's suffering, or is he simply an amused bystander? If he is responsible, how far back do his machinations go? Did he orchestrate either of Paul's divorces, or his mother's death?
    • Is Lane a kind young man with a crush on Maya, a womanizing Van Wilder-esque Casanova using the hotel to pick up girls, a ghost trapped in the hotel, or trapped between dimensions?
    • Is Vincent a competent thief, or is he as clueless as Paul Blart?
    • Pretty much the only person who doesn't get any of this is Maya, who the hosts agree is a lovely young woman in some pretty terrible circumstances.
  • Critical Dissonance: After watching the first Blart movie for the Origins episode, the hosts are all in agreement that the sequel is a far superior movie. This is in stark contrast to both the critical and public reception to the sequel, which was even more negative than the first film's.
  • Harsher in Hindsight: The hosts point out in the 2017 episode that the scene where Paul Blart defends a drunk man who is sexually harassing a woman, while already bad, is even worse in the wake of the #MeToo movement.
  • Hilarious in Hindsight: Due to the fact that the podcast is only released annually, the hosts will often forget things they've said in previous episodes, leading to some funny moments.
    • In the 2019 episode, Travis says that the first Paul Blart movie is "more of a movie" than the sequel. Come the Origins Bonus Episode, where all 5 hosts decided to watch the first movie, Travis says the exact same thing but reversed, seemingly without even semembering his previous statement.
      • Also in the 2019 episode, Justin and Griffin both complain about Travis sharing information about the first movie, which neither of them had seen. This was just 6 months prior to the aforementioned Origins episode.
  • So Bad, It Was Better: Part of the reason the hosts end up favoring the second Paul Blart movie to the first. While both are bad movies, they find the second one to be goofier and stranger in execution, which leads mostly to bigger flops but occasionally to bigger laughs. The first movie, by contrast, is just kind of boring in its badness.
  • Special Effects Failure: The hosts point out that the glue gun Paul uses in the film's climax shoots out an unconvincing CGI material similar to Flubber when it very easily could've been done with practical effects.
