YMMV / Theme Park

Go To

  • Anti-Climax Boss: Antarctica's difficulty is supposedly "fiendish", but given the amount of money the player probably has when taking Antarctica on, they'll have the resources to easily start up a viable theme park there anyway. Most of the difficulty there comes from building around the immovable rock formations, like the ones that are left behind when a broken ride explodes.
  • Condemned by History: Fans of RollerCoaster Tycoon, Planet Coaster, and even Theme Park’s own sequel may find the game too lacking in variety and options, despite having began five years prior to Tycoon. Later ports suffer from this greatly, having been built on the same mechanics as the original, yet competing directly with the rival series.
  • Germans Love David Hasselhoff: The series was very successful in Japan, specifically the console ports; The Playstation version sold more over there than in any other region, and the 3DO port was the 3rd best selling title overall for that console in Japan.
  • Good Bad Bugs:
    • In the original, it's possible for wage negotiations to go your way by making an ungodly large offer at first, and then gradually rescinding on it; the workers will extend their hand to meet yours over and over, possibly even accepting a pay cut if you get them far enough.
    • Making carnival games which have stupidly high chances of winning combined with cheap prizes and expensive ticket costs add up to some tremendous profits.
  • Low-Tier Letdown: Yes, it may be rated as having "very poor" reliability, but in comparison to rides that are merely rated "poor", the "Snakes And Ladders" ride still breaks down way, WAY more often than it feels like it should and will likely spend just as much, if not MORE time out of service than it does seeing actual use. You will hate it for that alone, and the fact that it has poor entertainment ratings and a ridiculously low amount of people that can use it at once just makes it even more of a must-skip.
  • Nightmare Retardant: The animated version of the Game Over sequence. The player-character survives the suicide attempt, because he only jumped from what appears to be the ground floor.
  • Scrappy Mechanic: Although generally quite a solid port for the most part, the DS version of the original game (based on the MS-DOS version) left out the ability to turn the stations for the track based rides, making building them somewhat tricker than it needed to be.
  • Signature Scene: The infamous Game Over scene, which plays when the player is bankrupted. It features the player avatar jumping out of the window due to his failures. While he survives due to jumping from the first floor, its dark tone in contrast with the rest of the game stands out to many players. The scene is also made more infamous in some console versions, as due to limitations the screen is instead a still image of him jumping with no indication that he survived.
