  • Complete Monster: See here.
  • Moment of Awesome:
    • Eliza Cortly gets one when facing off against one of the resident sociopathic Big Bad and one of the strongest Seers who ever lived, Reinhard Heydrich. First Eliza duels him in the mental plane while he's in the form of a several-headed dream-serpent but only manages to land a dozen mere scratches on him. Then, in the midst of his Evil Gloating, he feels weak and she reveals that those "mere scratches" were actually crippling blows masked by her obfuscation spell, causing his mental avatar to crumble. Undeterred, Heydrich tries to carry out the final step in his masterplan: using the psychic energies of everyone who died in World War II to fuel a spell that would ascend him to godhood. He begins to summon and control the energies he needs through his psychic tether—only for Eliza to give the order for Elazar to snipe said tether with a psychic bullet. Without it, the maelstrom of psychic power is too much for him to withstand and the smug, genocidal bastard is rendered Deader than Dead.
    • Both of the fights Elazar, a Jewish Seer, has against Dietrich Boehmer, a towering, savage Blood Knight among the Nazi conspirators. Each time Elazar able to best Boehmer despite overwhelming odds. The first time he does it in spite of two bullets in him and Boehmer's slag-beasts tearing through the town they're in, and even then Elazar manages to send run him off by blinding him. The second time, after Boehmer has been enhanced more by the powers of the City to the point where he's seemingly invulnerable, Elazar soaks his bullets and blades in a solvent caustic to City-flesh then manages to shoot and stab him enough over the course of their duel to get the poison coursing through his veins and tear him apart from the inside out. He only survives due to heavy augmentation by the Shadows' Consultant and even then he remains a shadow of his former self.
  • Nightmare Fuel: Everything about the slag-fathers, with their appearance as seven-foot-long, shapeless, blobbish, abominations with exposed organs being the least disturbing thing about them. They're City beasts the Nazis are researching in pits under concentration camps and keep them fed with prisoners. They also give hundreds of women to the creatures, which rape and impregnate them by invading their every orifice with tendrils, leading to the eventual birth of slag-beasts. And then it's revealed the Nazis introduced them into the water supply so people unknowingly have the dormant monsters inside them, only to be violently killed when the creatures burst out of them and begin killing everything in sight.
  • Tear Jerker: Pretty much the entire ending. Hardestadt proposes to Eliza, who happily accepts, only for the Shadows' Consultant to reveal herself to Eliza and threaten to murder Aisling, as well as many others, if Eliza does not abandon Hardestadt. Hardestadt goes from happily celebrating his successful proposal with a drink only to find Eliza gone and a short note written by her, telling him she rejects his proposal and not to look for her. The tragedy then turns horrific as the Consultant takes the opportunity to cement her petty vengeance by raping Hardestadt, first shape-shifting into Eliza to seduce him while he's drunken and despondent. Afterwards the Consultant adds to the cruelty and sadness by torturing Eliza to almost nothingness. The only happiness comes from stories set in the future already proving that things will get better.
