YMMV / The Wizard of Oz: Beyond the Yellow Brick Road

Go To

  • Awesome Art: The graphics are probably some of the best on the DS, and the in-game art is beautiful as well.
  • Awesome Music: Both vocal songs are quite lovely.
  • Anti-Climax Boss: Despite having her own battle theme and her being plot important, Protea goes down far easier than her daughters in spite of her hard hitting attacks. While she does have a spell that inflicts confusion, by the time she uses it, the fight is close to over.
  • Captain Obvious Reveal: It's incredibly obvious that OZ is the villain.
  • Game-Breaker: The spells you can obtain by defeating each of the Father Dragons can really turn the tide of battle. The Tinman's Battle Wind allows him to hit enemies up to 4 times, which makes the last two witches far more bearable and is useful for level grinding against Spooky Boos. If the Tinman is out of commission, the Cowardly Lion's Lion Dash works as an acceptable substitute despite only hitting once due to its high attack power.
  • Les Yay: Much like Dorothy and Ozma in the books, Flora and Dorothy become very close over the course of the game, with an illustration in the manual showing them relaxing in a field together.
  • Suspiciously Similar Song: The intro and title screen use what sounds like the first few notes of "Over the Rainbow" before going off in a different direction.
  • That One Attack: Every boss from Holly onward has one. OZ especially with his "RIZ-ZOAWD" spell, which super charges his magic power. And then there's the "catastrophe" attack that the dragons have.
  • Waggle: The trackball control scheme is very rare among video games, let alone RPGs, and is part of the reason the game didn't sell well.
