YMMV / The Simpsons S5 E3 "Homer Goes to College"

Go To

  • Fanon: This YouTube video animated the missing part of the Itchy & Scratchy cartoon, showing how Scratchy kills Itchy in the end.
  • Franchise Original Sin: This is often cited as the "patient zero" for episode plots being fueled by Homer acting like an obnoxiously wacky asshole, and even named the trope Zany Scheme. Most people will let it slide, though, because there was an actual reason for why Homer was acting like this, and the whole point was supposed to be that he was wrong to do so—later episodes just treated it as his standard mode of behavior.
  • Hilarious in Hindsight: When learning that Homer is going to college, Bart remarks, "Barber or clown?" Homer does go to clown college in "Homie the Clown" next season and will much later become a hairdresser.
  • Unintentional Period Piece:
    • A significant cameo in the episode is Richard Nixon (who demands the instigators of the pig prank to be punished and later is the target of a bra bomb in the Video Credits), placing this episode before his stroke and eventual death four days later in April 1994.
    • Two major jokes in the episode revolve around the nerds using the Simpsons' phone lines for their computers' dial-up modems, placing the episode well before items such as wi-fi lines or laptops were more widely available from The 2000s onward.
  • Woolseyism:
    • The Finnish subtitles on Disney+ add an extra layer to Homer's S-M-R-T bit, by making him misspell "Fiksu" as "Fisu"; the former means smart, while the latter is synonym for fish.
    • The Latin American translation of the episode changes the item Gary the nerd wanted to plug in (and thus decides to unplug the TV) from a rock tumbler to a multiplexer router. It also changes Homer's "I’ll be the hero of the party!" when he spikes the punch to "vamos a hacer bullicio! (let’s cause some ruckus/mayhem!)"
