YMMV / The Purge: Anarchy

Go To

  • Anvilicious: The movie is downright relentless with spreading its "Rich people oppress the poor with Government help" Aesop.
  • Alternative Character Interpretation:
    • The Murder Squad leader "Big Daddy". Was he obsessed with tracking down Eva and Cali because he hated poor minorities, he had a twisted desire to rape and kill them, or because along with Leo they escaped him once and learned the truth about the government murder squads sent to kill people in low income areas?
    • Eva's friend Tanya. Was she planning on murdering the refugees in her house the whole time, even popping pills to create an adrenaline rush, only for her sister to beat her to the punch, or was she simply on edge about her sister learning about her husband cheating with her?
  • Awesome Music: The music played in the closing credits is both chilling and awesome.
  • Ensemble Dark Horse: The biker with the "GOD" mask. He left quite a visual impression.
  • Genius Bonus: At first glance, the religious fanatic massacring people on the bridge in "Anarchy" calling herself "The Left Hand of God" seems like a zealot ascribing a position of holiness and righteousness to themselves, but in the Bible, the left hand of God is actually a position of disgrace and evil, where the wicked are made to stand on judgment day.
  • I Knew It!: A popular fan theory was that the government was lying about the percentage of the populace actively participating in the Purge. This was often paired with speculation that the regime was using "death squads" to increase the body count. The sequel confirmed fans were right on both counts.
  • Magnificent Bastard: Sgt. Leo Barnes is a vengeful Purger out to avenge the death of his son. Armed to the teeth and always ready for a fight, Leo shows his compassionate side when he rescues Eva and Cali from mercenaries. He agrees to protect them in exchange for a car, only to discover there is no car right before they're all kidnapped by wealthy socialites. Fighting his way out almost singlehandedly, Leo continues his quest for vengeance, even holding his target's wife at gunpoint, only to ultimately spare his target's life. Years later, serving as the head of security for Senator Charlie Roan, he uses his preparation and quick thinking to ensure they both survive the night, including escaping her house through a secret trap door, luring two Neo-Nazis to their death via their own tracker, and ultimately saving the Senator from a kidnapping, leading to the abolishment of the Purge.
  • One-Scene Wonder: Carmelo Johns. It helps that he's the Big Good and Chewing the Scenery, and being played by Michael K. Williams doesn't hurt either.
  • Spiritual Licensee: The sequel is this to Manhunt, minus the snuff film elements. A person (or a group of 5 in this case) trying to survive the night against various gangs of masked psychopaths in a lawless city. Including gas mask mooks that look nearly like the Cerberus. There is even a plot line of the wealthy capturing victims to hunt for sport.
    • Critics have called it the closest thing to a decent Punisher movie they could get.
  • Surprisingly Improved Sequel: The original had a 38% on Rotten Tomatoes, Anarchy has 58%. It probably helps that Anarchy put far more focus on the idea of being caught outside during Purge Night and how society views the Purge in general, whereas the previous film was your typical "bad guys break into a house and the homeowners have to survive" plot.
