YMMV / The Pet Girl of Sakurasou

  • Diagnosed by the Audience: While there's no official explanation for Mashiro's odd behavior and lack of social skills, outside of Sorata saying she is "special" in desperation, it is commonly agreed among North American fans that Mashiro is autistic. The descriptions about her behavior follow textbook definitions of autism so closely that they have to apply Occam's Razor.
  • Memetic Loser: Guess who's in the loser section on the "Blonde Haired Girls Always Win" list?
  • Memetic Mutation:
    • Plan C.Explanation  Also becomes a Running Gag in the show.
    • "I believe in panties."note
  • Seasonal Rot: The light novels after the anime ends get hit with this hard. Sorata and Mashiro become an Official Couple and Nanami is promptly Put on a Bus with no resolution to her arc at all. Jin and Misaki also disappear. In between, a new pair moves into Sakura-sou, one of whom being a girl named Kanna who has a crush on Sorata and tries to win him over when he's already dating Mashiro. In between, the personalities of the main characters take shocking, nonsensical turns: Sorata turns into a horndog who only cares about Mashiro for sex, completely disregarding his original characterization as someone who looked after Mashiro because it was the right thing to do, and Mashiro, originally characterized as mentally eight years old, becomes smart enough to figure out that he's doing it. This leads to a frustrating Time Skip ending where nothing is resolved. Many who pick up the books after they loved the anime wish they hadn't.
  • Ship-to-Ship Combat: Sorata/Nanami vs Sorata/Mashiro. The competition is tight. In some discussions it even entered Die for Our Ship territory.
  • Suspiciously Similar Song: The BGM track "Okiro, Shiina" is a groovy, bass-heavy remix of "Aquarela do Brasil".
