YMMV / The Nanny Affair

Go To

  • And You Thought It Would Fail: Fan response to the book's announcement was extremely negative, with the book's description and steamy advertising leading many to believe the book would be a clone of the poorly received Witness: A Bodyguard Romance. And while there were some similarities to Witness (short chapters, steamy content and only one love interest), fans were pleasantly surprised at the likable characters (particularly the twins), and unlike Witness, the romance was handled relatively tastefully and didn't completely overwhelm the plot. This led to The Nanny Affair becoming the first mature book and the first single love interest book to be serialized.
  • Base-Breaking Character:
    • Some players view Sam as sweet, caring, and trapped in a miserable and loveless "relationship" that they need to be rescued from (or they don't view Sam's dynamic with Anna as cheating at all). Others view them as creepy, controlling, predatory towards Anna, inexcusably cheating on their fiancée, and an Extreme Doormat for letting Sofia boss around Anna.
    • Anna herself - she's either an immature, petty homewrecker who needs to learn to keep it in her pants, or a strong, ambitious, outspoken young woman who can't help falling in love with Sam.
  • Broken Base: In Book 3, Chapter 18, after all the trouble Addison has caused, players are split on whether to forgive her for everything. Those willing to forgive her say she deserves to remain in the twins' lives, since she is their mom. Those who refuse to say what she did to try to get back into the Dalton family's lives is unforgivable.
  • Designated Villain:
    • A lot of readers feel this way about Sofia. She may be entitled, stuck-up, bossy, and not good with children, but she does genuinely attempt to bond with the twins and generally isn't overtly rude to Anna unless Anna is rude first. Most agree that the book hasn't quite sold her as the loathsome villain she's made out to be and she doesn't deserve to be cheated on.
    • Addison (Sam's first wife) is an even bigger example. Unlike Sofia (who also had an affair and eventually resorted to blackmailing Anna), Addison hasn't even done anything wrong. She was presumed dead for five years, suffered head trauma and lost her memory after a horrific subway accident, missed out on spending time with her family (whom she genuinely wants to reconnect with when she finally gets her memory back), and (as revealed at the end of Book 3, Chapter 5) is still legally married to Sam. And yet, she's treated as an antagonist for having the audacity to get in the way of Anna and Sam's wedding, despite A) still being legally married to Sam, and B) Anna got in the way of Sam's engagement to Sofia, resulting in her being dumped at the altar for a woman she barely knows by comparison.
  • Ensemble Dark Horse: Fans quickly took a liking to the twins Mason and Mickey, many considering them to be among Choices' most engaging child characters along with Zoey from Mother of the Year.
  • Fan-Preferred Couple:
    • Robin isn't officially a LI but Anna can flirt with them. Many players want to be able to romance Robin and feel that they have a more interesting personality and more chemistry with Anna than Sam.
    • A lot of people want to hook up with Sofia.
    • With the introduction of Jordan Le in Book 2, many players wish that they're a love interest.
  • I Knew It!:
    • People had predicted that Sofia was cheating on Sam a long time ago, and especially with Robin. Chapter 19 finally confirms it with Anna walking in on them having sex.
    • Since Book 2 Chapter 18, people had predicted that Addison, Sam's ex-wife, is still alive, despite Sam telling Anna that she passed away 5 years before the start of the story, due to the appearance of a stranger whose character model depends on Sam's. In Chapter 20, the twins confirm that the stranger is indeed Addison.
  • Memetic Mutation: After Chapter 19 featured special artwork of Sofia fooling around with Robin in the bathroom, Reddit users had all sorts of fun photoshopping Sofia into various crazy scenarios.
  • Moral Event Horizon: A lot of former Sofia fans feel she crossed this line either when it was revealed she was cheating on Sam or when she blackmailed Anna.
  • Unintentionally Sympathetic: When it’s revealed Sofia is cheating on Sam, Anna reacts with shock, and the scene’s apparently written to show it as a new proof of Sofia’s villainy. However, Sam has also been cheating on Sofia, with Anna, since the start of the book, and the readers are supposed to cheer for it. Especially since Sofia doesn’t particularly establish herself as a villain, it’s hard not to be at least understanding about what she does.
