YMMV / The Moon is Blue

Go To

  • No Such Thing as Bad Publicity: Despite the outrage over its content and it's ban in multiple states, it still made nearly nine-times its budget, likely factoring into The Hays Code's downfall.
  • Overshadowed by Controversy: The film version is perhaps best known for the outrage from Moral Guardians at the time over its sexual content. The Motion Picture Association of America refused to grant it a seal of approval, but Otto Preminger and United Artists went ahead and released it anyway. Some theater chains refused to carry it, and a few states even banned it. Preminger and UA took the state of Kansas to court over its ban, in a case that ultimately went to the Supreme Court, who called the Kansas ban unconstitutional. Said issue was immortalized in the M*A*S*H episode "The Moon is Not Blue," where Hawkeye and BJ go to great lengths to get a copy of the banned film... only to discover it's actually an innocuous romantic comedy where the only controversial content is that the heroine is referred to as a "virgin."
