• Banned in China: Some theater chains refused to carry the film, and a few U.S. states even banned it. Preminger and United Artists took the state of Kansas to court over its ban, in a case that ultimately went to the Supreme Court, who called the Kansas ban unconstitutional, which is considered one in a series of events that led to the downfall of The Hays Code.
