• The Woobie: Poor Yangchen... among her many travails in the novel, she's forced to sell her glider staff in order to coerce the Shangs of Bin-Er into raising funds, the Fog of Lost Souls attempts to steal her away, and she's banished from the Northern Air Temple... and that's all before the halfway point of the book. It Gets Worse; she nearly loses all of the funds she raised for Bin-Er in a game of Sparrowbones, and her sky bison Nujian dies to a combustionbender who betrayed Yangchen after she rescued him. Said combustionbender was also a child with massive Power Incontinence, so now Yangchen has the Death of a Child on her conscience as well. You just want to give her a hug by the end of the novel.
