- Esoteric Happy Ending: An infamous one that really makes the final moral of the story questionable. The film basically ends with the alien virus defeated... But with what we've seen of the movie, Humanity was improving thanks to the aliens, aside from suppressing emotions. The movie flat out implies humanity is better off being dominated than having free will because Humans Are Bastards.
- Fridge Logic: An implication is made that although the invasion has been defeated, the virus has made a permanent foothold in North Korea and won't be stopped and ended there anytime soon if ever. Considering the way that whole regime and society there are like, it makes sense that a virus that creates absolute and emotionless control and conformity could succeed in such a country.
- Harsher in Hindsight: The invasion is very viral and often involves the infected spitting on the non-infected or into their drinks. This looks worse in 2020 with the Coronavirus/COVID-19 pandemic where the virus has spread around worldwide infecting people (with the United States, the UK, Brazil, and Italy being amongst the hardest hit) and often poor hygiene practices exacerbated the problem, the problem gets worse when panic-buying customers spit into the faces of retail workers when irate, even prompting police intervention and $35K worth of grocery produce had to be disposed of after a woman decided to spit on it.
- Nightmare Retardant: The film is Lighter and Softer than the previous versions and is Anvilicious in its attempts to incorporate The War on Terror.
- Too Bleak, Stopped Caring: With how much the main characters like to talk about how Humans Are Bastards, it makes it difficult to actually care about them.
