YMMV / The Immortal (1990)

  • Awesome Music: The entire soundtrack is great, but the main theme stands out most of all.
  • Memetic Mutation: "I see you have come."
  • Nightmare Fuel: Of all the deaths featured in the game, being killed by having your body swarmed by hundreds of baby spiders would probably be enough to turn any gamer subjected to this image into a full-fledged arachnophobe. Unfortunately (or fortunately, depending on who you ask), the level where this happens got cut from the NES version in its entirety. The music that plays during the level does not help.
  • That One Level: Given this is a game where death is as close as a step to the left or even in your own pack, this could be most of them, but several do stand out:
    • Level 5: Near the end of the level, you come to a huge room where stepping in the wrong place gets you killed by a worm. You have two items to clue you in on the safe path: a note with directions and a Worm Sensor that makes noise and changes pitch the more you're in danger. Unfortunately, it's difficult to use properly (the warning pitch VERY quickly goes from "no worm here" to "you're already dead" range and the isometric view doesn't help much with parsing out the directions), and you still can't really take things cautiously as the sensor only remains functional for a short time after you activate it. If it's exhausted, you're on your own to get out and will likely die.
    • Level 6 (video game ports excluding the NES version) or the Spider Level. The end of the level has you floating down a LONG hallway that's littered with egg sacs. The flight is very hard to control and can have you going all over the place, leading to you accidentally flying into an egg sac and being brutally killed. And like the Worm Sensor mentioned above, it too is on a short timer, meaning you have to gun it and pray you keep control. Oh, and the egg sacs are placed randomly, so no memorizing which ways you'll need to dodge.
    • Level 6 (NES) or Level 7 (every other platform): This level's main puzzle is trying to lure the Norlac into the drain on one side of a huge tunnel while floating on a barrel in the water. Navigating the barrel around isn't TOO difficult, but it takes practice, and if you skew any at all, the Norlac will catch up to you and kill you. Still isn't as difficult as the Spider Level, though.
