YMMV / The Gray Garden

Go To

  • Awesome Music: Sunspot Beam (Guitar Version) is an uplifting rock version of Eithw and Kcalb's theme which plays over the end credits of the Good Ending.
  • Creepy Cute: Rawberry's abilities invoke this aspect of her character purposefully.
  • Crossover Ship: Ivlis/Yonaka has a following. The usual rationale is either that it's still better than any of their canon options (neither of them is a Yandere and they're not related) or that Ivlis is the least rapey Deep-Sea Prisoner villain, instead motivated by the same wrath and suffering that makes Yonaka a Nominal Hero.
  • Draco in Leather Pants: Emalf has his more sadistic traits downplayed in the fandom. Ivlis also got this treatment after The Sun's Curse due to the reveal of his past, which made fans more sympathetic towards him.
  • Ensemble Dark Horse: The Passing Demon despite, well, passing through, ranked 5th in the most popular Gray Garden characters.
  • Goddamned Bats: You have the option of not fighting them, but they will be a nuisance as you walk through the narrows paths on the maps. Aside from the bats, there are other kinds of flame demons and animals like crows, lambs, and rabbits.
  • Harsher in Hindsight: Ivlis snaps after Kcalb takes his powers back from him, to the point that in the Normal Ending, he kills everyone but Etihw and destroys the Grey Garden out of pettiness. After The Sun's Curse was aired, well...we know now why Ivlis was so desperate to become powerful.
  • Les Yay: Very prevalent among the main girls. They can easily be coupled up into Yosafire/Froze, Macarona/Rawberry, and Dialo/Chelan, and for each pair, the girls' likes in their Bonus Room profiles are stated to be each other. Yosafire/Froze is the most obvious example of this, as Yosafire explicitly states she wants to be Froze's girlfriend and how she has no interest in anyone but Froze. Froze's Tsundere tendencies and her When She Smiles moments towards Yosafire help fuel the ship as well. Other than that, Dialo/Chelan are very friendly as they are the only pair who live together.
    • The bonus film about macarona spending a night at Perservers household. Rawberry's desire to lick and nibble Macarona along with her remarks that she looks "tasty" carries some heavy implications. It is all topped of with Raspbel's remark "Good girls should be in bed by now.".
  • Portmanteau Couple Name:
    • Yosafire/Froze = Yosafroze.
    • Etihw/Kcalb = Eticalb
    • Emalf/Yosafire = Emalfire
    • Wodahs/Grora = Wodagrora
  • That One Level: Running from Emalf and his army of flame bats is a guessing game of trial-and-error, through a large maze to boot. Get caught on a corner or lag for a second and you're guaranteed to get caught. Then you'll have to restart from the beginning, but not before having to get through a cutscene every single time.
  • What Do You Mean, It's for Kids?: Deep-Sea Prisoner has officially rated the game for all ages, but there are uses of the words "boobs" and "hell" (and in the Japanese version, one of Yosafire's insulting nicknames for Emalf is "kuso gurasan"), and the deaths in game are quite (if not quite) bloody.
