YMMV / The Good Place S 4 E 04 "Tinker, Tailor, Demon, Spy"

  • Continuity Lock-Out: Glenn's behavior and defect from the Bad Place will make more sense if you've seen "The Selection", which was a web-exclusive short series that aired a few weeks before this episode did. In the last episode, Glenn is uncomfortable about the Bad Place's decision to pick humans specifically designed to torture the Soul Squad, and seems to be legitimately against doing anything to cheat or purposefully sabotage the experiment.
  • Epileptic Trees: When this episode first aired, there were a few people who apparently weren't satisfied with Michael offering to sacrifice himself as proof he was really him, and were still convinced he was Vicky in a Michael suit. This theory would be completely debunked by the next episode, which shows the real Vicky in the real Michael suit.
  • I Knew It!: Many fans correctly predicted that "Linda" was intended to fail so the Bad Place could switch someone on the train in the first episode of this season. Although Michael was the most popular prediction, some did correctly guess Janet.
  • Narm Charm: On paper, Michael confessing that his true form is something as ridiculous as a fire squid would seem like it would be kind of funny, but it's not in the slightest. The shame, disgust, and fear in Michael's voice as he describes himself is palpable, and if anything, the fact that Michael's true form is so absurdly disgusting is part of why the scene works; Michael wants the humans to view him as their equal, and with Michael's natural form being so blatantly inhuman and demonic, it would be harder for them to do that.
