YMMV / The Five(ish) Doctors Reboot

Go To

  • Fridge Horror: Colin Baker has been forcing his family to rewatch Vengeance on Varos so much that he wore out the DVD. Vengeance on Varos is a VERY bleak story, and is second only to Genesis of The Daleks as the darkest story the series produced. Imagine forcing your family to watch it over and over again...
    • Actually, Colin says the previous DVD "strangely went missing", implying the Baker family took matters into their own hands. It's just their patience, not the DVD itself, that wore out.
  • Heartwarming in Hindsight: The main actors here eventually appeared again on the actual show in the BBC 100th Anniversary Special, The Power Of The Doctor.
    • Janet Fielding's insistence that the BBC won't call Peter back for the 50th also becomes this with Tegan's return in the same story, with her and Davison getting to share a scene.
  • Hilarious in Hindsight:
    • Either Paul McGann shot this when he knew he'd done the minisode "The Night of the Doctor" or he shot this before they asked him back. Paul being officially tied into the 50th anniversary when the trio wasn't is still funny. It also adds increased subtext to the scene where the three ex-Doctors are protesting outside of BBC Television Centre and Baker informs McCoy that McGann is tied up with filming commitments — the implication now being that he's filming his minisode for the 50th anniversary. From what he's said in an interview, apparently he knew about the minisode at the time, but he didn't tell any of the other former Doctors about it. So it's a sort of genuine, inadvertent example of dramatic irony that the other Doctors don't know what Paul was busy with.
    • It turns out that the reason Tom Baker didn't appear was because of his "The Day of the Doctor" cameo.
    • Colin knowingly pointing out the "making of documentary" (to Sylvester's bemusement) is either this or an in-joke, as he would go on to narrate the "Behind the Lens" special that aired immediately after "The Day of the Doctor" (even wishing the series a Happy Birthday with John Hurt, Paul McGann, David Tennant, Matt Smith, and Tom Baker).
    • Calling The Hobbit movies a flash in the pan doesn't seem nearly so petty after it became apparent that they wouldn’t have the same staying power as The Lord of the Rings series.
    • Russell T Davies' idea of the Doctor having sonic eye beams instead of a sonic screwdriver doesn't sound so outlandish after the Twelfth Doctor spent a series wearing sonic sunglasses.
    • And now that adds a whole new sense of hilarity because he's returning as showrunner!
    • Jenna Coleman is part of a gag where she lovingly tells Davison he was always her mother's favourite Doctor, only for the scene to rewind a bit and for her to revise herself to say he's actually her favourite Doctor. Less than a year later, Coleman would be co-starring with Peter Capaldi as the new Doctor, and the 28-year age difference between the two turned out to be irrelevant - but that didn't stop some fans from making a similar joke as that done with Davison.
    • Not so much "hilarious" as interesting: Sean Pertwee mentions working on a "hush-hush" project in the US. At the time this was filmed, he was most likely referring to the pilot for Gotham.
    • Colin's bragging about his new "Vengeance on Varos" DVD having "extra features! Even more of me!" is amplified by the trailer for the 2019 Season 23 Blu-ray box set showing just how much he loves them, as he's in court for contesting a parking ticket he received while recording over 10 hours of new Blu-ray extra features.
    • David Tennant shows up as the exasperated and effortlessly successful Only Sane Man to his father-in-law's hapless egotist desperately craving the spotlight and feeling lost without it. In 2020, Tennant would star in another As Himself low-fi comedy which depicts Tennant as the hapless egotist desperately craving the spotlight and feeling lost without it.
  • Memetic Mutation: 'Even more of me!' got a minor resurgence on twitter in early 2022 after Colin Baker was first announced as playing an alternative War Doctor in Big Finish's Unbound range and not long later was also announced as succeeding Tom Baker in the role of the Curator for Stranded. The meme even came back in late 2023 when Big Finish announced "The Quin Dilemma", a set featuring four different versions of Sixth Doctor from different points in time.
  • Slow-Paced Beginning: The opening with the two actors sitting in chairs talking about roles isn't much of a Teasernote , but things do get rolling afterwards.
