YMMV / The Black Scorpion

Go To

  • Hilarious in Hindsight: Several times people address the main character with an emphatic "Dr. Scott!"
    • The Scorpion’s face used in the closeups is similar to an obscure 80s toyline Rocks and Bug and Thing, specifically the bugs’ gimmick of their heads opening up to reveal a second, ostensibly scarier face when squeezed from the sides.
  • Narm: The drooling scorpion puppet in the closeups is hilarious.
  • Nightmare Retardant: The rather goofy face of the non-stop motion giant scorpion looks more Ugly Cute than intimidating.
  • Took the Bad Film Seriously: Animator Willis O'Brien, the same person who animated King freakin' Kong, delivered some of the smoothest stop motion of his career (The "cave of monsters" sequence) for a low budget '50s sci-fi movie.
  • Visual Effects of Awesome: Willis O'Brien and Pete Peterson delivered arguably one of the best stop motion monsters with the scorpions, which look, move, and act almost exactly like the real thing. The movements are extremely fluid and come off particularly well in the various giant arthropod battles and rampage by the biggest scorpion at the end.
