YMMV / The Black and White Minstrel Show

Go To

  • Overshadowed by Controversy: One of the most popular programmes ever aired on British television, but today all discussion of the show focuses on the racism of its content (justifiably so, given that the majority of performances involved Black Face).
  • Values Dissonance:
    • Harmless, fun family entertainment when it started out. Today, and even while it was still airing, it's viewed as excruciatingly racist to the point where The BBC isn't proud of it - an second crossover with Doctor Who in 1972 is infamously not even acknowledged as having aired and has only a single surviving still.
    • Re-runs of the TV series, and stage productions of the show, were apparently very popular in South Africa right up until the change in outlook that occurred in 1994, long after the show was dropped everywhere else.
