YMMV / The Ben Chatham Adventures

Go To

  • Anti-Climax Boss: In Chateau of Death, the main villain, alien Napoléon Bonaparte, dies from getting caught in the crossfire while the heroes are fighting his androids.
  • Anvilicious: LBC's morals tended to be...unsubtle.
  • Bile Fascination: It has become by far the most "popular" series in the Doctor Who fandom because of this, to the point where it can be regarded as the Whoniverse's version of My Immortal.
  • Creator's Pet: 95% of the time, it's either the Doctor or UNIT that saves the day, but, for some bizarre reason, they divert the credit away from themselves and praise Ben to the high heavens, even when he only has the most peripheral involvement in stopping the bad guys.
  • Designated Hero: Ben. It's doubtful that anyone would realize he's supposed to be the hero, or at least one of the the heroes, if they weren't actually told.
  • Fan Nickname:
    • Spartha Jones, and occasionally Ben Shatham.
    • Sparacus himself has gained a few, such as “King Weirdo” or “The Fishy One”.
  • Funny Moments: Sparacus actually wrote to Doctor Who Magazine on one occasion, asking them why they had never featured Ben Chatham in any of their articles. They responded with, "Er...who?"
  • Hilarious in Hindsight: The Lord of the Reedy River has Ben running into Robin Hood, someone that the Doctor himself would later cross paths with in "Robot of Sherwood".
  • Memetic Mutation:
    • Untrue!
      • Unsubstantiated assertion!
    • Most bizarre...
  • Questionable Casting:
    • Shortland (nee Coronation) Street actor and former no-hit wonder Adam Rickitt was selected by Sparacus as the perfect choice to portray his upper-class, absinthe-swilling, archaeologist hero.
    • Similarly, Sparacus's choice of actress to "play" Katie Ryan is...Belgian pop star Kate Ryan.
    • And, of course, there's Shakey Jake, played by one of the experts from Time Team (who is, ironically, an actual archaeologist).
  • So Bad, It's Good: One view shared by those who view Sparacus as a parody himself.
  • Unpopular Popular Character: Barry Tuck is loathed by the in-universe cast for being a colossal pervert. But, seriously or not, even the story’s harshest critics loved him, and asked Sparacus to include him more, to which he obliged.
  • Vocal Minority: Or so the author claims.
  • Wangst: There is nothing else to describe what unfolds every time Craig Chatham appears. Ben himself isn't exactly free from this either.
