  • Alternative Character Interpretation: When Ye Hua comes to ask Dong Hua about the divine fungal grass and the mystical beasts guarding it, the former emperor's motives are unclear. Is he simply answering Ye Hua's questions, knowing the prince will go on with his plan to restore Mo Yuan for Bai Qian regardless what Dong Hua says? Or, given how he reveals he knows about Bai Qian and Mo Yuan and goes into a tangent about their relationship, is he doubling down and provoking Ye Hua into doing it? Given that he's implied to know the big secret about Ye Hua's origins, he may know that it would better if it's Ye Hua's power that restores Mo Yuan. As the situation with Qing Cang gets worse, Dong Hua may also be gambling on bringing back Mo Yuan as a necessity and figuring that Ye Hua has the best chance to survive.
  • Awesome Music: The opening song, Three Lives, Three Worlds, and the closing song, Bracing the Chill.
  • Jerkass Woobie: Li Jing. He's fickle and selfish, as seen when he sleeps with Xuan Nu after declaring his love for Bai Qian, but he's also The Un-Favourite of his family, he truly loves Bai Qian even though he betrayed her, and he ends up married to a woman he hates.
  • Overshadowed by Controversy: The novel attracted controversy when there were reports that author TangQi blatantly copied the story from a danmei novel from author Dafeng Guaguo called Taohua Zhai 桃花债 note  and other novels like the Chinese love novel Fei Wo Qingcheng 非我倾城 note  while ridiculing the original author in many ways to ruin her reputation, which led to a lot of famous authors and fans to boycott TangQi. Unfortunately, due to how successful the drama is,note  the drama's production team doesn't acknowledge the novel's plagiarism allegations or take any action against TangQi and is caught helping to scrub the controversy off Weibo and other Chinese Social Media.
  • The Scrappy: Su Jin is very unpopular because of her obsession with Ye Hua and her repeated attempts to get him to marry her, even when he's made it clear multiple times that he hates her.
  • Special Effects Failure:
    • Some of the fantasy creatures are very obviously CGI.
    • During Ye Hua's official ascension to Crown Prince, it is also very clear that Vin Zhang, who plays Li Jing, was not present when they filmed the full crowd scenes of the throne room. Instead, he's in a few close-up shots edited into the sequence.
  • Squick: Bai Qian preserves Mo Yuan's body by feeding him her blood.
  • Unintentionally Unsympathetic:
    • Xuan Nu. Li Jing seems to have found something to empathize with when she dies, noting he can finally see her true face and seems to realise why she was the way she was. Indeed, we see her mother being a bit overbearing and it's explained she was being forced to marry against her will. Thing is, nothing about her life was truly horrible, and she just starts ruining Si Yin's life because the men at Kunlun won't fall at her feet for being the only girl around. She knows what she is doing is wrong, but since it furthers her position and goals, she never apologises for anything and blames everyone else for her issues even when she caused them. Xuan Nu's jealousy is responsible for: the break-up of Si Yin and Li Jing; Li Jing's 70,000 year long depression; the deaths of 100,000 Celestials, at least; over 100,000 Ghost Tribe members; the sealing of Qing Cang (not that this is really a bad thing); the shattering of Mo Yuan's soul; the loss of Celestial prestige due to Mo Yuan's sacrifice and the closure of Kunlun Mountain; Bai Qian nearly dying preserving Mo Yuan's body and her constant blood loss over the millennia; her husband not having an heir; cursing herself and her own child; Li Yuan's rebellion and the loss of life that caused; stealing Mo Yuan's body and kidnapping A-Li causing the loss of Li Jing's trusted generals. By the time she gets herself killed, she's cost the life of more loyal soldiers and causes Ye Hua to lose an arm and nearly die from loss of cultivation. Any sympathy the scene tries to invoke thus comes across as incredibly hollow, even if she was trying to revive her child - a child that was sick solely because of her.
    • The Celestials who come to the Fox Den to claim Ye Hua's body from Bai Qian, particularly Le Xu. Whilst Le Xu is a grieving mother, the way she basically blames Bai Qian for all the suffering Ye Hua underwent to protect her comes across as this. Bai Qian didn't have a choice to undergo her trial as Su Su, such things just happen. Furthermore, Ye Hua never would have had to suffer if his family, including Le Xu, had simply been nicer to Su Su in the first place, instead of treating her like dirt and trying to have her killed. At this time, Le Xu flat-out told Su Su that she only saved her life for the unborn child's sake and belittled her for being a mortal. At no point did she consider her son's feelings until Ye Hua practically tried to kill himself. Bai Qian is forced to swallow the tirade in large part because the Celestials have ganged up on her and brought Dong Hua with them.
