  • Ling Yu is so upset at being captured and forced to become Qing Cang's godson that he keeps trying to commit suicide to spare himself as well as stop the inevitable war that Qing Cang is trying to start. He tries to slit his wrists twice, throws himself into a pillar three times, drown himself twice, and starts starving himself. When Mo Yuan comes to rescue him, he's hardly able to stand. Later on, he admits he only wanted to survive long enough to apologise to his master for being an embarrassment.
  • Mo Yuan taking the heavenly trial of lightning bolts on Si Yin/Bai Qian's behalf. He locks her in a cave where she's left crying and pleading to do it herself. Afterwards, she cries out her apology for being a poor student.
  • Bai Qian falls in love with and decides to marry Li Jing... and then she walks in on him kissing Xuan Nu. She's so heartbroken about it that she goes and burns everything he ever gave her.
  • The deaths of Ling Yu, Yao Guang and Mo Yuan. Mo Yuan's death is especially sad because of how heart-broken Bai Qian is afterwards.
  • The golden lotus spirit (i.e future Ye Hua) tries to comfort Si Yin over Mo Yuan's death. It is then utterly panicked when it thinks that Si Yin is about to kill herself and tries to stop her. This is despite the fact it's a spirit, she can't see it and it can't touch anything.
  • Bai Qian, despite her pain and anger, humbles herself to Li Jing to ask for the soul jade, which will preserve Mo Yuan's body. He claims it's lost (though he withheld it out of jealousy) and she accepts this, until she finds Xuan Nu who shows it off out of pure spite. Bai Qian looks like her heart was broken all over again.
  • After Mo Yuan's death, his disciples leave Kunlun Mountain. There's something incredibly sad and poignant about them going around closing the windows and doors before they leave.
  • How desperate Bai Qian's mother, father and brother are when they find her near-dead after feeding blood from her heart to Mo Yuan's corpse, to preserve it. Her parents argue over who will give up half their power to stop her dying and her mother is in such a panic she almost stops listening to Zhe Yan's advice.
  • Poor Sang Ji who has to listen to Shao Xin suffer in the Evil Sealing Pagoda and realising that he cannot protect her from his own father. He breaks down in tears before the Emperor and says he can only die with her, and his father simply says he'll let him. The only way they survive is because Sang Ji makes one last ploy - to commit the act in front of the entire court and its guests. Zhe Yan stops him mid-swing from killing Shao Xin, noting that whilst the couple did embarrass Qing Qiu, it was for love and he really doesn't think they need to die for it.
  • When Ye Hua finds out that the Heavenly Emperor has discovered Su Su and she's in the Celestial Palace. He absolutely freaks and breaks down in Lian Song's arms, as he comes to realise that being with her is going to be next-to-impossible.
  • Su Su's (Bai Qian's) slow descent into depression as Su Jin's manipulations and Ye Hua's deliberate coldness wears her down, making her believe he never really loved her. This is cemented when Ye Hua is forced to take her eyes to give to Su Jin. Poor Su Su is reduced to crying, pleading and telling Ye Hua to get away from her. When she wakes up, she's completely broken. She often refuses to let Ye Hua touch her, even after she gives birth to their son.
    • Ye Hua's reaction to Su Su pulling away from him over time and when he realises the situation Su Jin put her in after faking the murder attempt at Zhuxian Terrace. He's holding back tears as he tells Lian Song he can't protect her, and he loses it when he has to take Su Su's eyes.
  • Everything about Su Su's jump from Zhuxian Terrace. From her firm decision to do it, mourning how she'll leave her son behind, recalling her happy memories with Ye Hua and then how she feels he betrayed her. Then Ye Hua sensing something off after A-Li won't stop crying, trying to find her and listening to her admit to what she's doing, before desperately trying to get to her. It culminates in Su Su jumping with firm resolve and Ye Hua following after her after failing to stop her.
    • Then the aftermath. Ye Hua's near-death and his heart is so broken it looks like he won't ever wake up whilst his family cries over him. Even when he does manage to wake, he refuses to forget Su Su despite the pain and his mother asking him to take a potion to do so. The look on his face when he sees Su Jin, who caused his pain, is just one of cold loathing and sadness. Meanwhile, Bai Qian is left bloodied in the Peace Tree woods and so mentally broken she would rather forget it all. When her family find out this, they're all gathered around her bed deciding it best to let her forget the agony.
  • Ye Hua's reaction to the theft of the Soul-Gathering Lamp and that it's gone out, crushing his hope that Su Su will return.
    • Then there's how he tells A-Li and his son refuses to accept it, causing them to fight, leaving them both in tears.
  • Despite how heartwarming it is when Ye Hua comes across Bai Qian in the Eastern Sea, the look on his face when she rejects him (as she doesn't remember being Su Su) is a gut-punch.
  • When it begins to dawn on Ye Hua that Bai Qian doesn't reciprocate his love and is likely in love with Mo Yuan. This isn't quite the case, but from his perspective, it seems to be. He tries to reason that Mo Yuan is gone so he'll have time but when Zhe Yan reveals that Mo Yuan is making a return, Ye Hua slowly slides into desperately trying to keep Bai Qian with him. Then he decides he might as well sacrifice his life to bring Mo Yuan back quicker, just to make her happy.
  • Combined with heartwarming. When Bai Qian says she loves Ye Hua and wants to marry him, he's so happy he cries.
  • Bai Feng Jiu's desperate attempt to restore Dong Hua's destined love on the Rock of Three Lifetimes. She cuts off one of her own tails in order to made a magical knife to try and carve his name back in the rock (next to hers to boot). Cutting off said tail is stated to be like ripping out her own heart and is life-threatening. Dong Hua finds her basically unconscious, still trying to carve his name even though it keeps disappearing...
    • What's worse is that Dong Hua later admits that his name was originally next to hers. So, Feng Jiu's feelings were both legitimate and destined, but because he devoted himself to the sake of the realms he removed his name for fear that Love Ruins the Realm. Finding out that the one you were supposed to be with chose everything else over you is utterly heartbreaking.
  • Bai Qian getting her memories back from her time as Su Su. It's as if all of that pain just happened and she's left a broken wreck again, causing her to drink even more than she already had been until she snaps into revenge mode. Even after getting her eyes back, she's so upset she can't figure out if Ye Hua actually did love her then or if he does now, and she spends a week drunk in her Fox Den. Meanwhile, Ye Hua stands outside in all weather waiting to see her and explain himself but she refuses to see him, even screaming for him to leave.
  • Ye Hua's death. He dies in Bai Qian's arms as she begs him not to, then trying to threaten to forget him so he'll be forced to live. She ends up sitting on the same riverbank where she held Mo Yuan's body, utterly broken and refusing to let anyone claim Ye Hua's body, only removing the shield when her master shows up.
