YMMV / Synth V

  • Alternative Character Interpretation: Like with VOCALOID, the characters are liable to be interpreted in any which way regardless of whether they have officially stated lore. Most companies encourage this to broaden creativity.
  • Broken Base:
    • While the Kotonohas have been pretty well-received overall, some have taken issue with the fact that their voices have been blended into a single voicebank rather than as separate voicebanks packaged together a la Kagamine Rin and Len or anon & kanon. While it's possible to create "Aoi's" voice or "Akane's" voice by playing with the voice settings, some have preferred that they be separate banks since they were already separate banks and characters in VOICEROID.
    • With the announcement of Synthesizer V AI Gold's focus on appealing to "professional musicians", some worry that Synthesizer V is following the path Vocaloid 5 went - that is, alienating their fanbase to appeal to professional musicians.
    • Many users had trouble with the program after the release of 1.7.0, claiming it diminished the quality of some voicebanks like Solaria and produced inconsistent results. It got so bad that Tsuina-chan's official Twitter asked users of her voicebank to hold off on updating her, and Eclipsed Sounds recommended users finish and save current projects before downloading the new update since "this update does change certain behaviors". The problem stems from the High Dynamics Vocal Models feature, which completely changes how the voices in the program are synthesized and, importantly, cannot be opted out of unless you completely revert the program back to previous versions. Fortunately Eclipsed Sounds and AHS both have previous builds saved where users can redownload them, and HDVM was replaced with Diffusion Probabilistic Models (DPM) in 1.8.0, which so far has been received more positively.
    • There is a debate over the direction taken with Dreamtonics' voicebanks (barring Eleanor Forte) and whether or not they should have had mascots. One side argues that Dreamtonics' voicebank line is fine without them, as like the VY line in VOCALOID, they are meant to be judged mainly on vocal quality rather than from the appearance of a mascot, as well as giving creators the ability to assign any kind of appearance they want if they so choose. On the other hand, others argue that mascots have been a marketing tactic for vocal synthesizers for a reason as they give a user an image for the voicebank at first glance and make them more memorable (often citing Miku and the memetic design for Kevin as examples), and that the lack of avatars beyond stylized letters plus the sheer number of voices make the voicebanks hard to get attached to in comparison to other characters. And even the VY series still had items representing the characters instead of just plain letters. The arguments can get heated, especially over places such as Twitter.
  • Ensemble Dark Horse:
    • Eleanor Forte still remains extremely popular beyond her status as the first English SynthV for her cool and elegant design and extremely clear English that even VOCALOID has trouble matching up to.
    • SOLARIA also became popular pretty quickly for her gorgeous box and character illustrations, sun goddess-themed design and powerful voice.
    • The Medium5 characters have also been quite recognized both in their home country and out of it for their beautiful elemental-themed designs and interesting lore with VOCALOID Xingchen.
    • Kevin was immediately meme'd on after his release for his rather average name compared to the other Dreamtonics banks at the time, but became popular for precisely this reason. Him being one of the more versatile Dreamtonics banks certainly helps.
    • Of the Dreamtonics faceless voicebanks, Yuma seems to have a particularly large following due to his cute Keet-ish voice.
  • Fandom-Enraging Misconception: It's best if you don't confuse SynthVs with Vocaloids or any of its other competitors - you will be swiftly corrected.
  • Fandom Rivalry:
    • With Vocaloid. This is mostly due to several companies who were formerly associated with Vocaloid like AH-Software and Quadimension moving their characters to the platform, making it highly unlikely they will see future VOCALOID voicebanks. Not to mention the overall cheapness of the program in comparison to the highly expensive VOCALOID5 and VOCALOID6, with many fans already praising the program for being better than its competitor.
    • With CeVIO to a lesser degree, with most of the arguing being about how each program's AI technology and features hold up in comparison to one another. Not helping matters is the very sudden rise of characters like KAFU, who briefly overtook the vocal synth scene at her release even with the additions of new SynthV characters like Eleanor AI or Koharu Rikka.
  • Fan Nickname: A decent portion of the fanbase collectively refers to the Dreamtonics banks as "(the) Letters" due to them all being represented by an initial rather than a traditional character image.
  • Friendly Fandoms: Also with the above two fandoms, with most fans of Vocaloid or CeVIO extending to be fans of SynthV.
  • Hilarious in Hindsight: A fandom in-joke involved taking Genbu's voicebank and changing his parameters to make him sound like the UTAU voicebank Kasane Teto. On April 2nd, 2023, Kasane Teto's Youtube channel released videos announcing a real Synthesizer V voicebank for Teto. Fans noticed and made videos comparing and pairing Genbu's Teto impression and Teto's genuine Synthesizer V bank.
  • It's the Same, Now It Sucks!: Most voicebanks the program has (especially the ones Dreamtonics releases) can sound similar, leaning towards a softer timbre with a paler tone in higher ranges. This is great if you're making softer, quieter music, but means you have limited options if you want to produce louder, more powerful songs.
    • This was also a criticism of ANRI's vocal modes when they released.
  • Memetic Loser: Once Teto got her SynthV voicebank, Genbu quickly gained this reputation among the Talkloid community, being treated as just a punching bag for Teto to abuse and commit crimes against as she pleased.
  • Spiritual Successor: The faceless Dreamtonics vocals (such as Saki, Qing Su, and Kevin) are often regarded as being successors to the VY line of vocals from VOCALOID, being avatarless vocals with no character outside of their perceived gender and voice type.
  • Unintentional Uncanny Valley: Some people have reported getting this feeling from the vocals in SynthV, due to how realistic they really are - some find it difficult to actually tell if it's a real singer or not, especially with the added smoothness of the AI vocals.
