YMMV / Svengoolie

Go To

  • Ensemble Dark Horse: Despite originally being created for Toon In With Me, Nostalgiaferatoo became very popular with fans for his hilarious facial expressions and mannerisms, to the point where he became a third member of the Sven Squad by the end of 2023.
  • Fan Nickname: Sven, short for Svengoolie. "Goolie" isn't his last name, except in instances where he's referred to as "Mr. Goolie".
  • Harsher in Hindsight: On May 4, 1985, at the conclusion of the brief retrospective that closed the 300th episode of Son of Svengoolie, Rich Koz - as himself - asks, "How much longer Son of Svengoolie will be on the air - who knows?" The answer turned out to be eight months, with the show's final episode airing the following January. What really triggers this trope, though, is when WFLD station announcer Jim Barton makes a rare on-camera appearance to tell Rich that "someday, you will be canceled" because that's how television evolves. "Someday" coming around eight months and three weeks later (the Son of series finale aired on January 25, 1986) is pretty harsh.
  • Mexicans Love Speedy Gonzales: Locals of Chicago's Berwyn suburb generally love Sven for his "BER-WYN!?!" Running Gag.
  • Moment of Awesome:
  • The Scrappy: While Nostalgiaferatoo and Gwengoolie are popular among fans of the Sven Squad, IMP isn't nearly as popular due to his high-pitched, overly hammy voice and obnoxious mannerisms. Fans generally agree that he works much better in small doses or with a Straight Man to annoy than on his own.
  • So Bad, It's Good: Both the show (on purpose) and some of the films he shows.
  • Suspiciously Similar Song:
    • The ending theme has elements similar to "I Can't Turn You Loose".
    • The "Pictionary" segment uses a melody similar to Jeopardy!'s "think" music.
  • Tear Jerker: Koz's blog post on Jerry G. Bishop's death, including the revelation that it was Bishop's idea for Koz to launch Son of Svengoolie. And especially this:
I have always said- there are a lot of people who would have used my material, said “thanks a lot kid” and walked away. Jerry was generous enough to help me get established.
