YMMV / Star Wars: Republic

Go To

  • Broken Base: Whether the number of surviving Jedi in the series (particularly new characters who first show up in Into the Unknown) is a cause for complaint or celebration among the fanbase is a bit divisive.
  • Complete Monster: Issues #23-26—"Infinity's End" arc: Mother Zalem is an evil leader of the Dathomirian Nightsisters who plans to use the Infinity Gate to destroy Coruscant. Having enslaved and mated with a Jedi Knight in her youth before killing him, Zalem has her daughter Ros Lai abandoned to cruelty of her clan after she seemingly ends up deformed and poweless. Zalem has her slaves dig up Kwa pyramids in deadly conditions and has Kwi, devolved descendants of the Kwa, captured and tortured. Zalem has Jedi Master Quinlan Vos captured and injected with a deadly poison before venturing into the Kwa pyramid, and later activates the Infinity Gate, sending a destructive wave to Coruscant, with her only regret being that she wouldn't be able to hear the screams of Jedi and countless innocents who will die.
  • Ensemble Dark Horse: Go here.
  • Harsher in Hindsight: Go here.
  • Magnificent Bastard: Vilmarh "Villie" Grahrk is a crafty Devaronian mercenary who helps to instigate the Yinchorri-Jedi war for money, later coming across the amnesiac Jedi Master Quinlan Vos and assisting him to win a bet. Guiding Quinlan for his own schemes, Villie later betrays him to the architect of his misfortune before promptly betraying his employer for Quinlan's sake once he has the credits in his possession. Villie later helps renegade Twi'lek criminal Kh'aris Fenn elude the law by audaciously telling the truth about his location and spends the rest of the Clone Wars looking out for himself before managing to deceive the Clone Army about Quinlan's survival so he may save his Jedi friend one final time, being forever immortalized by his Wookie protege Chak as the namesake for his ship: The Grinning Liar.
  • Moral Event Horizon: Go here.
  • My Real Daddy: There's a sizable amount of fans that see John Ostrander and Jan Duursema as the ones who defined Republic, Quinlan Vos, Aayla, and Ventress.
  • Nightmare Fuel: Virtually anything which involves the Anzati.
  • They Wasted a Perfectly Good Character: Quite a few, largely combined with Too Cool to Live, given how rare it is for a character outside the main cast to appear for more than two story arcs. Ros Lai, Zule Xiss, Glaive, Fay, Tohno, Vaabesh, Xiaan Amersu, Knol Ven'nari, Ausar Ausset, and Tap-Nar-Pal are notable examples.
  • They Wasted a Perfectly Good Plot: It appears that Ki-Adi-Mundi and his supporting cast were meant to be the main characters for the series until the role was effectively assumed by Quinlan Vos. For example, while A'Sharad Hett does reappear, Aayla Secura is the one who eventually gets to defeat and capture Aurra Sing.

  • Unpopular Popular Character:
  • The Woobie: Numerous characters apply for this, ranging from Zule Xiss losing her arm, her master, and eventually her life, to Obi-Wan and Anakin when both are made the only survivor, as well as nameless people like the slavegirl seen with Jabba while Ki-Adi-Mundi showed up asking him for aid in a search for Sharad Hett.
