YMMV / Star Trek: The Next Generation S6E4 "Relics"

Go To

  • Canon Fodder: Geordi's comment that the Jenolan would probably still be in service is a reminder that while Star Trek series tend to focus on state-of-the-art flagships of their times, the Federation's fleet undoubtedly operates a number of venerable old ships retrofitted and jury-rigged into relevancy far beyond their prime years. Star Trek: Deep Space Nine would later explore this less glamorous side of the Federation, following the drama of daily life on a rickety second-hand space station turned vital military and diplomatic outpost, and the idea continues to be prime subject matter for both canon stories and fanwork.
  • Heartwarming in Hindsight: When reminiscing about their old ships, Picard mentions he would give almost anything just to fly his first command, the Stargazer, again. While Star Trek: Picard wouldn't let him retake command of that Stargazer, he would get to command the Enterprise-D once more to save the galaxy from The Borg one last time.
  • Memetic Mutation: "NCC-1701. No bloody 'A', 'B', 'C', or 'D'!". Since Star Trek: First Contact, fans also add "or 'E'!". And now with Star Trek: Picard, there's "or 'F' or 'G'!"
  • They Wasted a Perfectly Good Plot: The Dyson Sphere in this episode was such an awesome concept and actually fits the Star Trek premise to "explore strange new worlds". And Picard indicated that no such thing had ever been encountered before. It was also the first time that TV or film ever attempted to depict the Dyson Sphere. However, the sphere was little more than background scenery in an episode that had to be character oriented by necessity. It was proper to make Scotty's return the absolute focus of this episode. That being said, the Dyson Sphere could have been saved for an episode (or even a story arc) that would have focused primarily on about it and whatever was inside. The Jenolen could have been found stranded on any run of the mill space derelict and the story would have been the same. The sphere, and its constructors, did wind up being major and long-running plot elements of Star Trek Online, at the least.
